Star Wars: The High Republic | Can Jedi Have Pets?

Max explores the forbidden attachment of ‘The High Republic‘ Jedi apprentice Bell Zettifar

200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, the Jedi flourished in the time of The High Republic. Those stories will begin to be told in January of 2021 but we are getting tons of updates on the new characters who will be appearing. One that has caught my eye is a Jedi padawan named Bell Zettifar. The reason he catches my interest is that he apparently has a pet named Ember which is a species of creature called a Charhound.

Besides invoking thoughts of Houndour and Houndoom from Pokemon; I also thought of something. How are Jedi allowed to have pets when they are forbidden to form attachments to people. Yes, animals are not people but from someone who adores and would do anything for his cat; I know that most people love their pets like you would a spouse or a child and this doesn’t seem like a good idea for a Jedi student.

Revenge Of The Sith - Padme and Anakin

Anakin Skywalker was very close to his droid R2-D2 and Mace Windu found it disturbing. Maybe because Jedi really shouldn’t have pets? I can’t remember any Jedi who had a pet and I feel that the rules in 232 BBY may be a little more lax BUT I don’t see how the Jedi do not see this as a problem. In some instances, people love their furry friends more than other people. I love Izzy; she is the best cat ever! When she dies, I will weep and I hardly ever cry due to my stoic nature. If a Jedi loses a pet he/she/they love; they may become angry at whatever killed it (or if it died naturally) and turn to the dark side. It may seem silly to get so mad over the death of an animal But again; you don’t know how much you become attached to a pet until you own one.
