Thomas kicks off our “Countdown to Christmas” season with a retrospective look at Dreamworks’ Rise Of The Guardians

The Christmas season is upon us with Netflix starting to release its annual Christmas movies! Thus, it’s the perfect time to revisit Rise of the Guardians!

This movie features the team-up of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Sandman, the Easter Bunny, and Jack Frost fighting Pitch Black. It’s the Avengers of the Childhood legends. This story is based on the Guardians of Childhood books by William Joyce and I got to say this man had such a creative idea and I’m glad Dreamworks Animation made it into a movie.

For the casting, they only took the best: Chris Pine as Jack Frost, Alec Baldwin as North (Santa Claus), Hugh Jackman as Bunny, Isla Fisher as the Toothfairy, and Jude Law as Pitch Black. What a wonderful team of actors!

Each character is given their moment and we get to travel to each of their world, which means we get to the North Pole, to the Toothfairy palace, to the Bunny’s burrow. It’s a lot of magic! They beautifully captured what these legends stand for and what they mean to the kids around the world. As a little kid when I was believing in these things, it’s something I would have loved to see. But even as an adult, it’s still something I liked seeing. You’re simply transported into a world of dreams.

The stand-out for me was Jack Frost. He is the character who’s lost, he doesn’t know who he is, what he is. He’s not like the other legends who brings something to the children or at least, not that he is aware of at the beginning. There is a whole hero journey happening with Jack trying to find who he is.

Rise of the Guardians brings in everything you want from blockbuster movies – beautiful scenery, emotional moments, funny moments, and action. Except, instead of having superheroes, they have childhood legends fighting a villain. That’s why I think it’s a movie for the whole family because there’s something for everyone in it.

What makes this movie even more special is that it’s a Christmas movie but an Easter movie as well. It works for every season, literally! Any time is a good time to rewatch this wonderful movie! If you haven’t watched it yet, I would recommend it especially now during this second lockdown in most of Europe, it will cheer you up!
