Alongside Alice and the False Face Society, Batwoman will face-off against Black Mask in Batwoman Season 2
Black Mask will be terrorizing Gotham City in Batwoman Season 2. In a new report from Entertainment Weekly, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries has confirmed that Javicia Leslie will have her hands full this season.
In addition to Alice, Safiyah, and the False Face Society, Ryan Wilder will be facing off against the notorious super-villain Black Mask. We already knew that Victor Zsasz and Hush (aka Bruce Wayne) would be on hand to bring some menace. But now, we can add Black Mask into the mix.
Season 2
“We have a couple of big bads this season,” Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries said. “One, [who] we teed up midway through last season, is this woman Safiyah, and she’s sort of Alice’s Achilles’ Heel. And ultimately yes with the False Face Society, we will see the leader of this gang as Black Mask later on in the season.”
And, it seems that Ryan Wilder has her own issues with Black Mask’s gang: “While Ryan never used drugs, she was in a relationship where somebody was using drugs and it’s ultimately what got Ryan put away in jail. So, it’s this idea that Ryan is this innocent woman and if she were white, per se, she might not have had the same punishment [that] she, as an innocent Black woman, had to go through. That’s a huge piece of her backstory, so that’s something we’re exploring this year,” says Dries. “Batwoman has this particular vendetta against the False Face Society. Because the idea of drugs permeating the city and nobody taking any responsibility for it strikes at her core.”

Sadly, there’s no word on who the studio has pegged to play Black Mask. And whoever steps in to play the part has a lot to live up to after Ewan McGregor’s stellar performance in Birds Of Prey. But his involvement has certainly upped the menace factor in Gotham City for season 2. And that is an enticing prospect.
