Paramount reveals the first four Star Trek movies will get a September 4K Ultra HD release!
Set your Phasers for fun! As a massive ‘Star Trek’ fan, this news makes me extremely happy. Paramount Pictures has finally confirmed that the Director’s Edition of ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ will be attaining a 4K Restorative release. The original version of the film has been released on Blu-Ray already. But director Robert Wise always thought this version of the film was nothing more than a rough cut. However, twenty years ago, he was allowed to go back to the film and create his own version, closer to what he envisioned back in 1979. This version hasn’t been available due to the effects that were rendered in the film being in standard definition only. But this is about to change.
THE PRESS RELEASE!
Paramount Pictures released the following press statement regarding the film:
“The restoration will be undertaken by producer David C. Fein, restoration supervisor Mike Matessino, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, all of whom worked previously with director Robert Wise. The film will be prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new Dolby Atmos® soundtrack. The restoration is expected to take 6-8 months and will launch with an exclusive window on Paramount+”
TO BOLDLY GO…!
And that’s not all. Paramount has now also confirmed that the first four films will be getting the 4K Ultra HD treatment. I would assume that this will mean the original version of ‘The Motion Picture.’ will be getting re-released alongside the other three films as they are due for release this September 7th. Considering the Director’s cut of the film will take between 6-8 months to complete, this seems to be the logical conclusion (Pun intended). But I cant wait to watch the Battle of the Mutara Nebula in 4K. The self-destruction (sniff!) of the original Enterprise in glorious full color. And yes, the colors and contours of Vulcan. I would think that these will be released as singles ahead of a complete boxset of all the films, which will include the director’s cut, further down the line.
BEAM ME UP…A COPY!
I can’t wait to see what they do with ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture.’ It would be too much to ask for them to go back into the archives and splice in some of the footage that was included in the TV version of the film. That would possibly make the film over two and a half hours in length. But knowing they are remastering the film once again and improving things further, I will be grabbing my copy with both hands. For me, it is a must-have, and will be beaming myself up a copy as soon as it is released!
“Live Long And Prosper!”
Will you be adding this sensational box set to your collection? Leave a comment below. We love hearing from you.
