James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is an action-packed adventure with a lot of fun and heart, it’s total mayhem. However, the gratuitous gore ruins the movie.
The Suicide Squad makes its return in the DCEU with a brand new team. There are some returning characters too like Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and Amanda Waller. Unlike the 2016 version which is not David Ayer’s cut but the studio’s cut, James Gunn had full control over his movie. So, is this soft reboot really worth it?
Firstly, James Gunn understands The Suicide Squad – it’s a crazy team of misfits. So you get a lot of fun. There are some hilarious jokes. King Shark is one of the best comic reliefs of this movie. Every time he is on screen, you know you are going to laugh. Beyond the jokes, this movie also has a lot of heart. We get backstory for some of the main characters. So it makes us care about them or hate them for some. Peacemaker is the most despicable character of the movie even beyond Amanda Waller who is absolutely ruthless.
Ratcatcher 2 has the most emotional backstory and I really loved learning more about this character. And the same goes for Bloodsport, throughout the movie, you discover he is not so heartless. Obviously, it wouldn’t be The Suicide Squad without action. And this movie is action-packed, it’s total mayhem! It doesn’t waste time on that side. You directly go into the heart of the story. It’s a simple plot – Task Force X is sent to Corto Maltese to destroy something. Despite its simple plot, there are some really nice plot twists.
Nobody on the squad is safe. It’s also why a lot of secondary characters were chosen for this movie because they can easily be killed off. Nevertheless, I sat on the edge of my seat the whole time because there are some characters I care about. I’m hacked off about one death, especially since another bad character survived instead. For me, it shouldn’t have happened, that one character was central to Task Force X. If they ever do another Suicide Squad movie, it won’t be the same without him. There is also another character who I think shouldn’t have been killed off. Unfortunately, this one barely gets any screen time.
Dead people, you do see a lot of them in this movie. Like I said above it’s total mayhem. But there is one huge problem. That mayhem includes gore visuals. And when I say gore, it’s EXTREMELY GORE. It reaches a level where it’s too much. At times, it’s even hard to watch. And it doesn’t bring anything to the story, it’s just unnecessary gore. You can do violence without it being completely disgusting. If you take Birds of Prey, which is R-rated too, it’s a bit bloody at times but the violence never gets gore. That’s how you do it. You can read my review here. With The Suicide Squad, it’s too much. I’m so disappointed because I love the story and the characters but the gore is ruining it. It’s gratuitous and for shock measure.
CAST AND CHARACTERS
I do have a lot of good things to say about the cast though. It’s an excellent all-star cast. Margot Robbie is amazing as Harley Quinn as usual. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – it was perfect casting! No one else can play her. Harley is as crazy as she is in Birds of Prey. It’s total insanity!
I love how Amanda Waller is even more ruthless this time and Viola Davis delivers a killer performance here, you love to hate her. While with Peacemaker, it’s just different. John Cena plays the character in such a way that you can’t care about him. And you don’t love to hate him, you simply hate him. So, I can say that I have no interest in the upcoming Peacemaker series.
Then, you have new characters like Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport who are fantastic additions to the team. I really got attached to them. They’re really compelling. Both Daniela Melchior and Idris Elba deliver great nuanced performances. I liked Rick Flag in the first Suicide Squad but with this one, I like him even more. Unlike Waller, he is tough but he is genuinely good and cares about his teammates. He always does what’s right for his team. That’s what makes him a great leader. Plus, I just love Joel Kinnaman, he does a fantastic job.
I also have to mention King Shark voiced by Sylvester Stallone. You cannot not love him. This character is incredibly stupid but he is so funny. Like I said above, when he is on screen, you are certain to laugh. Polka-Dot Man is also a highlight of this movie. He is another level of weirdness. He’s not my favorite but David Dastmalchian is so good as this character. Finally, you have a plethora of cameos like Taika Waititi, Pom Klementieff, Pete Davidson, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Jai Courtney (who returns as Captain Boomerang).
I already mentioned the gory visuals but there is more to it than just the gory action scenes. The cinematography is really beautiful. Indeed, there are some spectacular shots! Plus seeing it in IMAX is even more impressive. You are really immersed into the movie. If you can see it on the biggest screen possible! The visual effects are also fantastic. Starro the Conqueror is so well done while also being comic accurate and not being ridiculous. It’s quite an achievement!
It wouldn’t be Suicide Squad without an awesome soundtrack featuring plenty of songs! James Gunn has selected songs that really fit with his scenes. The score is pretty good too but the songs are more memorable.
The Suicide Squad is an action-packed movie with a lot of fun and heart, it’s total mayhem. You really get attached to this new roster of characters played by an all-star cast and Margot Robbie is amazing as Harley Quinn as usual. However, the extreme gratuitous gore is ruining the movie.
The Suicide Squad is distributed by Warner Bros. and is playing in UK cinemas now. The movie will release in the United States in theatres and on HBO Max from August 5th.
