The fourth episode of Marvel’s What If…? is my favorite episode so far. It’s dark and heartbreaking with stunning visuals!
It’s time for our weekly dose of Marvel with What If…? This week’s episode is called What If Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead Of His Hands.
Strange’s heart is Christine Palmer so that is who he loses. Drawn by his sorrow, Strange is going to do everything to bring her back even if it destroys who he is. Throughout the episode, you feel sorry for Strange and what he is becoming. This episode is heartbreaking, to say the least. Even if you think you’re prepared for it, you’re not. I recommend having tissues nearby for the tears!
Beyond being deeply moving, this episode is also quite dark. We see a totally different Strange, he is broken and uses magic we hadn’t seen before. We encounter some creepy mystic arts creatures. There is a scary side to the episode. I think it prepares us for what we are going to see in Doctor Strange in The Multiverse Of Madness. I’m even starting to believe this version of Strange could appear in the movie. He would be a great opponent for the Doctor Strange we know.
Marvel has brought back Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, and Tilda Swinton for this episode. I love what Cumberbatch did with this version of Strange. You can hear a shift in his voice as Strange changes, he uses a darker voice. At times, it reminded me of how he talked as Smaug in The Hobbit trilogy!
Visually, this series continues to impress as well. I love the work that has been done on the lighting, it feels cinematic. Indeed, it really helps to build the dark tone of the episode. And the whole end fight is amazing! They used effects we had seen in the movies while also bringing new mystic art effects. It’s spellbinding!
This is my favorite episode so far, it’s dark and heartbreaking with stunning visuals!
