Child of Kamiari Month is an anime film directed by Takana Shirai. It was released in Japan in cinemas in October 2021. While internationally, it has been released on Netflix on February 8.

STORY

The movie follows Kanna who is fond of running. She shared that passion with her late mother. She embarks on a journey with Shiro, a rabbit and a demon named Yasha to collect feast offerings for the annual feast of deities. On this journey, Kanna discovers more about who her mother was while finally facing her grief. Undoubtedly, it’s a touching story. But it’s not overdramatic. Japanese anime are exceptionally great at telling stories about grief. And that’s because these stories explore the beauty of life and deliver an hopeful message. Child of Kamiari Month does exactly that. Even with all the fantasy elements, it remains an heartfelt story about grief. In fact, I would even say that the fantasy elements help diving into this tough subject. I think everyone who has ever lost someone they cared about can recognize themselves in Kanna. Grief is universal. And this movie deals with it in an empowering way. It asks the right questions and provides earnest answers.

Beyond that, this movie is also about self-discovery. On her journey, Kanna faces many challenges and sometimes she feels like giving up. But, she overcomes all the obstacles. By the end she knows exactly who she is and what she wants to do. Indeed, she is ready to face the future.

VISUALS

Liden Films has animated this movie. I love their work. Once again, they have delivered striking visuals. The character designs are delightful. And this movie has absolutely stunning backgrounds. It certainly transports you throughout Japan.

SOUNDTRACK

Jun Ichikawa has composed a beautiful score. Though, the highlights of the soundtrack are Miwa’s two songs. Particularly her song ‘Kanna.’ Indeed, it’s a wonderful song that perfectly summarizes the message of this movie. If you speak Japanese, pay attention to the lyrics.

VERDICT

Child of Kamiari Month is a touching and heartfelt story about grief and self-discovery. Liden Films’ striking visuals and Miwa’s melodious song sublimates this wonderful movie.

Child of Kamiari Month is now on Netflix.
