Who ya gonna call? Gil Kenan is slipping into the iconic flight suit to direct Firehouse: the Ghostbusters Afterlife sequel
Charge your proton accelerators and tune up Ecto-1 because the sequel to Ghostbusters Afterlife is crossing the streams at Sony. Although the studio is yet to guarantee a definitive release date, Jason Reitman has confirmed that Gil Kenan will be helming the hotly anticipated sequel. Kenan served as executive producer on Afterlife.
Deadline was the first to break the story before Reitman took to social media to confirm the juicy details. Reitman, the director of Afterlife and the son of Ghostbusters originator Ivan, will move into a new role as a producer. Although he is also expected to maintain his role as the writer of the sequel alongside fellow collaborators Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld. What’s more, insiders have added that the cast of Afterlife is set to return for Firehouse. That Includes Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon.
“It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” said Kenan. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.”
Jason Reitman took to Instagram and posted…
A FAMILY AFFAIR
“A few years ago, my father handed me the keys to Ecto-1, and together we made Ghostbusters: Afterlife” said Reitman. “Words will never express how grateful I am to have made a film with my father by my side. It’s now time to hand those keys to my creative partner and fellow Ghostbuster Gil Kenan, a brilliant director who will keep the Spengler spirit alive. I can only hope to provide him the same producorial care and support that my father showed me.”
Sony is eager to capitalize on the success of Ghostbusters Afterlife (read our review) after it trapped $200 million at the box office. In the wake of its success, both Reitman and Kenan signed exclusive deals and jumped into fast-tracking the sequel. And now, with the cast secured, and Gil Kenan tapped to direct, we can expect the superstars of the supernatural to be gearing up again very soon. Whether or not any of the original cast will return remains to be seen. After all, it took a monumental effort and a few personal favors to reunite the original cast for the previous outing. But with Reitman on hand to bring the project home, confidence is high that Ray, Peter, and Winston will be back to bust more ghosts. Even if it’s only in an advisory capacity.
