Strap on your proton packs because Jason Reitman is busy putting together his sequel to Ghostbusters Afterlife: Codename FIREHOUSE
Dust off Ecto-1 and slip into your flight suit because Jason Reitman is putting together his sequel to Ghostbusters Afterlife: Codenamed FIREHOUSE. The hotly anticipated sequel has been rumored for some time. But with Afterlife raking in over $200 million at the global box office on a budget of $75 million; Sony Pictures has given the green light for the sequel to move into production. And during yesterday’s annual GHOSTBUSTERS DAY festivities, the visionary director outlined the future of the Spengler family post Afterlife.
MANHATTAN ACTION!
Reitman took over the official Ghostbusters socials to broadcast the news far and wide and confirmed that the sequel will follow Callie, Phoebe, and Trevor in the aftermath of Afterlife. Moreover, the movie will focus on their return to Manhattan where the legendary Ghostbusters HQ awaits them. And more importantly, a steady revenue stream donated by Zeddemore Industries and its CEO and original Ghostbuster Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson).
“We’re writing as quickly as we can. We had the story before we finished Afterlife. And we have been crafting this with as much care as it took to build Afterlife into a worthy sequel.”
“The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters.”
Reitman also confirmed that Gil Kenan will return to help write the screenplay reuniting the team that helped stick the landing with Afterlife. And although franchise legend Ivan Reitman sadly passed away shortly after Afterlife‘s release, Jason had time to outline his future plans with his Dad.
“We talked about what we wanted to see happen to the Spengler family and even outside the Spengler family. And he was so excited. He was just thrilled about where we wanted to go. And sitting there, telling him what we wanted to do with the story was a daunting responsibility, but his enthusiasm for it is what fuels us today.”

DARK HORSE BUSTING
But the fun doesn’t end with the big screen sequel because Reitman confirmed that a new Dark Horse comic series will bridge the gap between Afterlife and its sequel. And what’s more, the series will explore new areas of the universe that have never been explored in film.
“When we first talked about Afterlife three years ago at Ghostbusters Day, our hope was that it would lead to all kinds of great storytelling, that it wouldn’t be a one-off film, but the opening of a door. And today, that promise comes true. If you’re a Ghostbusters fan, you’re about to have access to all different decades of Ghostbusters history as well as the future, characters you haven’t met yet, and places you haven’t gone yet. If you’re a Ghostbusters fan, you’ve got a lot coming your way.”
And if that isn’t enough to have you reaching for your proton pack, Reitman also announced that a new animated series has been given the green light at Netflix.
“This was a passion project of my father’s and it’s easy to understand why. The world of the unknown can only be properly explored through the limitless reach of animation.”
RELEASE
Sadly, Reitman and Sony Pictures have yet to issue a tentative release date for the Afterlife sequel. But with the concept already mapped out and the pieces already on the board; hopefully, we’ll be piling into theatres to experience the next chapter sooner rather than later. As a lifelong Ghostbusters fan, I was one of many fans who instantly fell in love with Reitman’s efforts. And the notion of another sequel is music to my ears. Especially with a familiar blast of energy from the Reitman family proton pack!
