
Thomas takes a retrospective look back at the biggest hits of 2022 to share his top 20 movies of the year!
2022 has been another great year for movies with plenty of new Marvel content, a new Wizarding World movie, and a lot of other amazing movies, so which ones made it to my top 20? Strap yourself in and return to the cinema.
20 – HUSTLE

Hustle has a lot of heart with an inspiring story. Throughout you can feel the passion that the people making this movie have for the subject matter. And Adam Sandler delivers what is probably his best performance.
19 – SPIDERHEAD

Joseph Kosinski never disappoints, he has delivered another awesome movie. Spiderhead is a twisted and captivating thriller with a great cast.
18 – THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT

Massive Talent is an insanely fun and smart movie. Nicolas Cage playing himself is as meta as it gets and he goes all in for that. Pedro Pascal is a scene-stealer, you just can’t get enough of him. And the two form a terrific duo!
17 – DRIFTING HOME
Drifting Home is a poignant coming-of-age adventure with a lot of heart and vivid visuals. This is another success for Studio Colorido.
16 – ALL THE OLD KNIVES

All The Old Knives is a mesmerizing spy-thriller, it kept me guessing the whole time. Both Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton deliver brilliant performances!
15 – THIRTEEN LIVES

Thirteen Lives is a suspenseful ride that brings to light the incredible efforts that were made to rescue these people. This is an uplifting story that Ron Howard expertly brings to the screen. Plus, it was great to finally see Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell working together on a movie.
14 – NIGHTMARE ALLEY

Stylish and clever, Nightmare Alley is a slow descent into hell led by a stellar cast. Bradley Cooper delivers a thrilling performance and Cate Blanchett is as amazing as usual, she perfectly plays the mysterious and cold doctor.
13 – AFTER YANG

After Yang is a beautiful and poignant story about loss. The visuals, sound mixing, and score are so soothing, there’s this feeling of familiarity. It is not a movie to watch but to experience.
12 – LIGHTYEAR

Lightyear is an absolute blast. It is an entertaining Star Wars-esque adventure with breathtaking visuals.
11 – BUBBLE
Bubble is a visual wonder that juggles between the thrills of parkour and the lyrical exploration of what it means to be human.
10 – TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Top Gun Maverick is a thrilling ride and also quite emotional. This is how you make a sequel. Joseph Kosinski’s visual style is simply breathtaking. Tom Cruise makes us feel the need for speed once again, no one does it like him. Easily one of the best movies of the year.
9 – BELLE
Belle is a visual wonder in which Hosoda makes a compelling commentary on social media. Kaho Nakamura’s songs are the highlight of the brilliant soundtrack.
8 – THOR LOVE AND THUNDER

Thor Love and Thunder is an electrifying and mesmerizing adventure. Taika Waititi perfectly balances humor with the emotional heart of the story. It can be hilarious at times while deeply moving in other scenes. He is the right man to tell stories about Thor. May he continue for the foreseeable future. He knows exactly how to balance humor and emotions while also addressing serious themes. This is undoubtedly the best Thor movie. And this is also the perfect movie for this Summer. Christian Bale’s unhinged performance with the amazing Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor is the highlight of this fantastic cast.
7 – THE BATMAN

The Batman is the best Batman movie. At its heart, it’s a mystery story and an in-depth character study. Matt Reeves has created a dark and gritty universe. And Robert Pattinson proves himself to be a memorable Batman delivering a complex and multi-layered performance.
6 – HOLD ME BACK
Hold Me Back is a refreshing and unusual romance. It can be funny at times but also deeply moving. Rena Nōnen carries the film with an exceptional performance. She knocks it out of the park. A true acting masterclass!
It is undoubtedly one of the best movies I’ve seen this year.
5 – BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a worthy sequel. It is a powerful and deeply moving tale of grief and acceptance. Prepare yourself because it will make you cry but it will also make you laugh and cheer. With great action, striking visuals, and a stellar cast, it delivers in every way. Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright deserve to be mentioned in the Oscar talks because they deliver memorable performances! This film is a wonderful tribute to both Chadwick Boseman and T’Challa. Truly one of the best movies of the year.
4 – FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE SECRETS OF DUMBLEDORE

The Secrets of Dumbledore is phenomenal. From start to finish, it is a magical adventure with a lot of heart. The cast is incredible and Jude Law is the perfect Albus Dumbledore.
3- DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS

Sam Raimi makes a glorious return to the superhero world with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It is a dark, twisted, and action-packed journey with horror vibes. Although Benedict Cumberbatch is fantastic as Doctor Strange, Elizabeth Olsen is the real star of this movie. And Xochitl Gomez is an amazing addition to the cast. Get ready for some great surprises. Moreover, Danny Elfman delivers a memorable score.
2 – FREE! THE FINAL STROKE PART 1
Free! The Final Stroke Part 1 is the penultimate film of the Free! saga. It is an amazing and compelling new entry into this franchise. A celebration of our beloved characters that will make you cheer, laugh and cry.
1 – EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

Everything Everywhere All at Once is the best movie of the year. This is a powerful and poignant story about family and love with marvelous visuals. It will make you cry, laugh and cheer. It is everything. And Michelle Yeoh is outstanding!
