TV Review | Star Wars: The Bad Batch (S2:E11 Metamorphosis)

“The Bad Batch Season 2 is winding up all the components for what will likely be a transformative finale!”

The Bad Batch Season 2 continues. Metamorphosis channels something that might have been more fitting to air in October (around Halloween) as it quickly evokes something out of a horror movie. A Clone Commando(!) (haven’t seen those in a while) is running for his life, terrified on a derelict ship. The fear is palpable and I am very much reminded of that creepy abandoned medical space station from Star Wars: Rebels. Meanwhile, The Bad Batch is giving Cid the third degree for abandoning them on that Ipsium mine world in the previous episodes.

THE THIRD DEGREE

Cid is very nonchalant about not sending them help and it’s quickly back to business as usual. She wants them to work another job like nothing significant happened! The clones seriously think of severing ties with Cid and who could blame them?! What that alien gangster eluded to in the racer episode may be true. Cid may be as cold-blooded as the scales on her back as she doesn’t seem to care about her “mercenary team” whatsoever.

However, the real meat and potatoes of this episode are what the Empire is up to on the cloning facility on Weyland. We are introduced to a new Imperial villain known only (for now) as the Doctor. He has a smooth quiet voice that somehow also manages to be commanding and sinister, and he is very much interested in squeezing cloning secrets out of the remaining Kaminoans.

THE EMPIRE

We really need to sit back and take stock of the fact that the Empire completely wiped out a species in the blink of an eye. And will continue doing so until someone stops theally have started to see that (through Andor and this show) how cruel and evil the Empire is. And I have less and less sympathy for individuals like Tamara Ryvora (from Resistance), saying that the Empire wasn’t all that bad. This stuff shows how naive later generations will be.

Now, I don’t want to spoil anything BUT WE GET A HUGE TREAT IN THIS EPISODE. A potential plotline that has been brewing since the late naughts is FINALLY coming to fruition. I wondered for many nights when this loose end would be revitalized and I must say that I almost feel it is too good to be true!

VERDICT

This show is winding up all the components for what will likely be a transformative rest of the season. And the title Metamorphosis is fitting in more ways than one. We are seeing the Empire evolve and change into something monstrous. And if that isn’t enough of a clue for what I’m teasing, then I don’t know what is. The stage is set. Let’s enjoy the show. Excellent episode. A little cliffhanger really ties it up nicely. B+
