James Gunn officially confirms his intention to direct Superman: Legacy for DC Studios – landing in cinemas in July 2025
James Gunn is officially directing Superman: Legacy for DC. When the newly minted DC Studios announced its seismic landscape change, Gunn was widely expected to take the director’s chair. After all, the visionary filmmaker is already busy writing the script for the project. But until now, Gunn had remained tight-lipped on the matter. But that all changed tonight when Gunn took to social media to confirm that he will be directing the movie alongside his duties as a joint CEO.
Gunn was quick to explains his motivations for taking the reins, and his post is incredibly poignant. In his deeply moving post, the director reveals the deep and personal connection to the project and what it means to him. Read on for the mult-tweet post.
Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

After Andy Muschietti’s The Flash hits the soft reset button this summer, the current crop of DC movies will conclude with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The superhero sequel will close out the current chapter of DC stories launched by Zack Snyder. In its place, a bold new chapter in DC’s history will emerge. DC’s Gods And Monsters slate will launch with stories set in an expansive and cohesive universe. All the while telling bold new stories from alternative universes and timelines from beneath the DC Elseworlds banner.
LEGACY
Superman Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

RELEASE
Sadly, the introduction of a younger Superman brings Henry Cavill’s tenure as the Man of Steel to a close. The actor famously returned to the role in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. But the sudden seizmic shift, and the appointment of Gunn and Peter Safran as joint CEO’s of the new DC Studios forced the creatives into a complete reset. How this soft reboot will effect the current crop of DC heroes remains to be seen. Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits cinemas this friday before The Flash speeds into the Speed-Force in June. Blue Beetle hits our screens in August before the highly anticipated Aquaman sequel closes out the current slate.
Superman: Legacy swoops into cinemas on July 11th, 2025.
