“The second season of Sonic Prime is a race against time for Sonic as he tries to fix reality. It’s double the fun and double the action. All in all, this is a satisfying season that will please fans of the blue hedgehog.”

After a successful first season of Sonic Prime, our favorite hedgehog and his friends are coming back to Netflix for more adventures throughout the Shatterverse. I had the opportunity to watch all the episodes of season 2 this week. This season once again consists of eight 24-minute episodes. Sonic Prime season 2 releases July 13.

STORY

Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger with Sonic facing Shadow in the Void. It left the audience wanting for more. And season 2 picks up exactly where we left off. In fact, the first episode heavily features Shadow. I think we can all agree this is a good thing, who doesn’t love Shadow? On top of that, the interactions between him and Sonic are just super cool. There is this rivalry between the two and yet they have to find a way to overcome that because there is more at stake. I like how they use Shadow in the series. He is only used during key moments. When he’s there, you know it gets serious.

The season premiere is a transition episode. Indeed, it sets the plot for these new episodes. Sonic and Shadow may have found a way to fix their reality. But for that, they need something that the Chaos Council also seeks. So for Sonic, season 2 is a race against time to save his friends and the universe. In his race, Sonic revisits the different worlds of the Shatterverse that were introduced in season 1. He and his friends have to fight the growing menace of the Chaos Council everywhere. Fighting different versions of Dr. Eggman isn’t an easy task. What makes them a threat is the number of their troops. Even though, the stakes are high, the series retains lighthearted tone of Sonic.

Undoubtedly, this season is even more action-packed with a faster pace. It’s double the fun and double the action. When the season ends you will be left wanting more. Sonic Prime is really the series Sonic fans deserved. It’s imaginative and makes good use of the concept of multiverse.

VISUALS & SOUNDTRACK

Moreover, the series retains the same visuals from season 1. It is an animation style that feels like a Sonic video game. It is quite fitting and it fully immerses the audience in the world of our favorite blue hedgehog. The character models are actually based on the contemporary video game models. This is why it looks so good.

We revisit the same worlds of the Shatterverse along with a decolorized version of Green Hill. This decolorized version is a cool concept. When entering this world, you immediately know something is off. Though, New Yoke City remains my favorite world. It reminds me of Gotham from Batman: The Animated Series with these buildings and the red sky but it has a more technological vibe.

In season 1, I thought the score was the weakest point of the series and I was hoping to see this part improved for season 2. However, I do think the score for these new episodes is still disappointing. It is a decent soundtrack with a nice electro and techno inspiration but there is nothing memorable there. Only the end credits caught my attention. It is a theme that feels intricately like Sonic. Additionally, I love the 80s vibe of that theme. It is a shame it isn’t used more in the series.

VERDICT

The second season of Sonic Prime is a race against time for Sonic as he tries to fix reality. It’s double the fun and double the action. All in all, this is a satisfying season that will please fans of the blue hedgehog.

Sonic Prime season 2 starts streaming July 13 on Netflix.
