James Gunn has cast Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner/ Green Lantern in Superman: Legacy
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is beginning to take shape. Overnight, news emerged confirming the casting of three more DC characters for the Man of Steel adventure. Just days after David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were cast as Superman and Lois Lane respectively, Gunn has cast his Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Green Lantern.
Isabela Merced will be slipping into the feathered wings as Hawkgirl. Edi Gathegi will be bringing Mister Terrific to life. And screen legend Nathan Fillion will don the green suit as the Guy Gardner incarnation of Green Lantern.
Merced is perhaps best known for searching for the lost city of gold in Paramount’s Dora The Explorer movie. Gathegi rose to prominence as the deceitful vampire Laurent in the Twilight saga. And Nathan Fillion is a long-time collaborator of James Gunn’s. After cementing his pop culture status in Joss Whedon’s Firefly, Fillion hit the ground running. He became a household name in the beloved Castle TV series. And, of course, he teamed with Gunn in 2021’s The Suicide Squad playing Cory Pitzner / T.D.K.
As of press time, it has yet to be confirmed which version of Hawkgirl Merced will be playing. Gunn can choose between Shayera Hol, an alien from the planet Thanegar. Or Kendra Saunders or Shiera Sanders Hall, the human incarnations. But given that Hawkman has already made his debut in last year’s Black Adam, either Saunders or Hall is the most likely option.
In addition, Gunn jumped onto social media to confirm that Jimmy Olsen will also be introduced in Superman’s newest adventure. Moreover, he assured the fans that Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Guy Gardner will all be reoccurring characters throughout the new DC Universe. So we can all look forward to seeing more from this trio throughout the first chapter titled Gods and Monsters.
The next DC movie to run the gauntlet at the box office is Blue Beetle. The studio shared a new trailer for the movie recently, and it gives us a better look at DC’s newest hero. But given the divisive attitude towards the outgoing slate of DC movies, Blue Beetle may be a hard sell. After all, 2023 has already seen the colossal failure of both Shazam: Fury of the Gods and The Flash which crashed and burned at the box office. And with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom swimming our way in December, the outgoing regime looks set to endure a painful exit before Gunn hits the reboot button.
Superman: Legacy will release on July 11, 2025.
