“I Am Groot is back with delightful new shorts. This series continues to be funny and absolutely adorable, sending Groot on new and silly adventures. The photorealistic animation style makes it a joy to watch.”
Last year, I Am Groot premiered on Disney + with 5 adorable shorts. While we wait for the next chapter of the MCU with Loki season 2 in October, Groot returns tomorrow with a fresh batch of 5 new shorts. Each short is roughly 4 minutes long.
STORY

These new episodes of I Am Groot are just as good as the first batch of episodes. Indeed, it continues to be this absolutely adorable and funny series. It sends Baby Groot on all new and silly adventures. I Am Groot successfully recaptures what makes the magic of Baby Groot. He is a fun character who is carefree, clumsy and a little bit mischievous. The carefree and mischievous part really make for some great laugh-out loud moments.
Director and writer Kirsten Lepore understands the character and James Gunn’s style. In fact, it truly feels like it’s the Baby Groot we knew from Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. While Lepore sends Groot on his own adventures, she keeps the tone from the films. This is why I think this series also works. It is because it has the same humoristic style that made people love these films.
Each short tells its own self-contained story. It doesn’t try to add anything to the bigger storyline of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s just simple shorts about Groot. And sometimes, it’s all we need. We don’t always need each entry of the MCU to be connecting to the bigger storyline, it’s fun to have stories that are just stand-alone. With Groot, you can’t get enough of it. I would love to get more episodes and I think I’m not the only one. Honestly, with this type of series, they could continue to make episodes for quite some time.
VISUALS & SOUNDTRACK

Moreover, the visuals of this series are just wonderful. The photorealistic animation style is truly impressive. In fact, the visual effects studio LUMA re-used the same model of Baby Groot that they designed for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. You can tell it’s the same. His expressions are simply priceless! The worlds and creatures created for this series are colorful and just fit with Groot. With this animation style, I Am Groot sets itself apart from other series. I am actually glad that Marvel Studios tries different things with animation. What If also has its own visual style.
Finally, Daniele Luppi returns to compose the score. Once again, she delivers a nice score that has a happy-go-lucky and adventure vibe that works for the character.
