Hammer has unveiled the full trailer for the upcoming reimagining of the classic DOCTOR JEKYLL story starring Eddie Izzard
The spooky season is upon us and after what has seemed like an eternity, Hammer Horror is emerging from its slumber with its long-overdue relaunch. The legendary studio is in the process of being resurrected by entertainment mogul John Gore. And the first title selected to herald in this new era of contemporary horror is the iconic tale of DOCTOR JEKYLL.
Hammer’s take on the legendary Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story stars Eddie Izzard as the infamous Dr. Nina Jekyll, a recluse who finds friendship with her newly hired help, Rob, played by emerging actor Scott Chambers. And together, the duo work tirelessly to ensure that Jekyll’s sinister alter ego doesn’t awaken. But where’s the fun in keeping Rachel Hyde under wraps? Especially when there’s so much chaos to enjoy! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Grab a cushion, slip behind the sofa, and hit play on the new trailer below.
An isolated mansion, a mysterious locked room, creepy corridors, a dusty cellar and a mad doctor… Hammer horror is back with a modern reimagining of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’. When ex-convict Rob takes the carer position to the infamous Nina Jekyll, little does he know he’s part of an evil master plan devised by her alter ego Rachel Hyde. But to what lengths will Rob go to satisfy his client’s weird wishes and his own ambitions for the daughter he has never even seen?
As if the chilling new trailer isn’t enough to have you gripping the arms of your chair, the studio also dropped an all-new poster for the big relaunch. And as expected, it features both sides of Izzard’s wonderfully evil persona. Check it out below.
A NEW ERA
The release of Doctor Jekyll heralds a new era for Hammer, founded in 1934. As well as significant investment, Gore’s new vision for the company, fuelled by a lifelong love of all things Hammer, will lead to a string of new films bearing the iconic Hammer name, and Doctor Jekyll is only the beginning. Gore commented “Given Doctor Jekyll was the first Gothic Horror book it is very appropriate that Joe Stephenson’s thrilling new film should be the first of a new generation of Hammer movies”.
Directed by Joe Stephenson (“Chicken”, “McKellen: Playing The Partand”) featuring an impressive cast including Eddie Izzard, Scott Chambers, Lindsay Duncan and Simon Callow, Doctor Jekyll’s UK-wide release marks the first release for the recently resurrected Hammer, following its acquisition by theatre and entertainment mogul John Gore.
It is an absolute joy to see Hammer Horror returning from its hiatus. Since its inception, the studio has been on hand to deliver some of the finest horror movies ever committed to British cinema. Not to mention helping to define the careers of some of the true greats of Tinseltown. After all, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Oliver Reed, and the sensational Caroline Munro have all featured in Hammer’s horror archive. And now, Eddie Izzard joins the long line of British talent etching their name into the history books.
Bringing a modern twist to the critically adored tale, Doctor Jekyll will receive its red-carpet premiere at London’s iconic Odeon Leicester Square on 11 October. And we will be there. But fear not dear readers because the movie will release in UK cinemas on 27 October 2023 – so update your Halloween watchlist and book those tickets now!
