THE PREMISE

In order to solve his financial problems, funeral homeowner Jeremiah O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones) decides to sell some of his funeral homes to Raymond Loewen (Bill Camp) of the big corporation Loewen Group. The two seemingly agree on a deal with a handshake. However, this handshake deal goes wrong and O’Keefe decides to sue the Loewen Group. He enlists the charismatic attorney Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx) to save his family business.

AN INSPIRING STORY

This is the story of a man with a small business and his new attorney going against a big corporation. What can a small business do against a company like Loewen Group? Obviously, this isn’t an easy trial. Loewen is represented by Mame Downes (Jurnee Smollett), a young and fierce attorney. She knows what she is doing and she knows contract laws. Despite being charismatic and having won a lot of trials, Willie E. Gary is an attorney who deals with injury, not contract laws, so he is not as prepared. Thus, it is an interesting confrontation between both sides during the trial. There are a lot of bumps along the way.

This trial becomes more than just O’Keefe vs the Loewen Group, Gary and O’Keefe expose the wrongdoings of big corporations like the Loewen Group. This means corruption but also racial injustice with the practices of the Loewen Group towards some poor neighbourhoods that are generally Black neighbourhoods. The Burial is exactly the type of inspiring stories I love to see. When you watch this one, it will definitely lift your spirits like A Million Miles Away which is also on Prime Video. It’s simply amazing to see that despite adversity, despite all the odds against them, people can still succeed and triumph.

MORE THAN JUST A LEGAL DRAMA

Moreover, this film is more than just a legal drama. It’s also a beautiful story of friendship between O’Keefe and Willie E. Gary. It’s an unlikely pair, O’Keefe is a small business man with a big family while Willie E. Gary is a charismatic and rich attorney. But the two form a strong bond and find out they do have more in common than they thought. The synergy between the two is great to see and it’s thanks to the performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx.

Tommy Lee Jones is right for this role of a small business man who is a genuine good person. He emits so much sympathy that you are just rooting for him to win the trial. In addition, Jamie Foxx is brilliant as Willie E. Gary. The way he talks, the way he acts, the way he stands, this is called charisma.

VERDICT

The Burial is an inspiring story of a small business man going against a big corporation. But it’s also a beautiful story about friendship with great performances from Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx who is brilliant and charismatic as the attorney Willie E. Gary.

The Burial releases October 13 on Prime Video.
