Hot Toys Review | The Grand Inquisitor (Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi)

“The Hot Toys Grand Inquisitor is an impressive figure with a fantastic headsculpt. The use of a USB-powered lightsaber is a game-changer for figures now!”

The Hot Toys Grand Inquisitor has arrived. This is the second figure from the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that Hot Toys has released, the first one being the Purge Trooper. Upcoming releases include Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Reva, and Darth Vader.

THE BOX AND ACCESSORIES

This is your usual Star Wars collectibles box, which means it’s a black box with a promotional picture of the figure and the Star Wars logo. Figures from the Obi-Wan Kenobi series have a red colored strip with two additional pictures of the figure.

The Grand Inquisitor doesn’t have many accessories but he does come with exactly what’s needed for him. The display base is your classic IP interior base with the usual nameplate. This one is black. It’s a simple base but a good one. In terms of hands, he has six. Two hands to hold the lightsaber, two open hands, one force hand that can also hold the hologram projector, and one fist hand. Strangely, there isn’t a second fist hand on this one.

USB POWERED ACCESSORIES

This is the first Star Wars figure that uses USB-powered lightsabers. No more batteries, it is exactly what I was waiting for. Plus, it’s really easy to use, no need to remove an arm and then insert batteries. You just have to plug the cable into a small power box that is included in the figure. Then you need a USB-C cable to plug into that box and finally, you can plug the cable into a phone battery or anything that has power with USB. It works the same for the light on the chest of the figure. Honestly, this is a game-changer for me. I love it!

As usual with lightsabers, you have normal blades and action blades. There are two hilts. The normal one and the USB-powered one. The saber is nicely sculpted. Finally, there is a Darth Vader hologram with a hologram projector. It’s not the usual comlink, it’s a bigger accessory.

THE FIGURE

I have been waiting for this one and I am totally satisfied with this figure! Hot Toys has beautifully recreated the costume of the Grand Inquisitor. This figure has a threatening look. The boots use pleather so be careful with that because it will get damaged over time. I would suggest not to move the feet too much. The rest of the outfit is made of fabric with the pieces of armor made of plastic, so you can go all in with the poses.

However, the cape is a simple one, with no wires inside. I always prefer when there are wires inside capes that way you give it an action pose like the figure. This one is only one piece of fabric with the inside one having the motif pattern, unlike Moff Gideon’s cape which was two pieces of fabric sewed together. Honestly, I do think the Grand Inquisitor looks better with the cape, it adds to his villain look. And there is even a hood, it looks good on him! The saber hilt can be attached to his back, it works with a magnet.

THE HEADSCULPT

The headsculpt is spot on, it just looks like the Grand Inquisitor in the series. This is amazing! You can recognize Rupert Friend here like in the series you can recognize him under the make-up. The level of detail is so life-like. The only thing missing here is the separate rolling eyeballs.
