Based on the best-selling memoir by Amy Liptrot, The Outrun stars Saoirse Ronan, Paapa Essiedu, and Stephen Dillane. Opening in the UK on September 27th.
After premiering at The Sundance Film Festival in January, this September sees the UK release of The Outrun. The movie is based on the best-selling memoir from Amy Liptrot, which was published in 2016. Academy-Award nominated actress Saoirse Ronan leads the film as well as serving as one of the producers on the project. Also featured in the film are Paapa Essiedu, Nabil Elouahabi, Izuka Hoyle, Lauren Lyle, Saskia Reeves, and Stephen Dillane.

The adaptation has been directed by the German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt from a screenplay she co-wrote with Amy Liptrot and a story the two co-wrote with Daisy Lewis. Joining Saoirse Ronan on producing duties are Sarah Brocklehurst, Dominic Norris, and Jack Lowden. The new trailer for the film has been released earlier today, courtesy of StudioCanal.
THE PREMISE
Rona, a young woman recently out of rehab for alcoholism, returns home to the Orkney Islands.

PRAISE
The film has garnered praise from some quarters after its premiere at The Sundance Film Festival. And its subsequent screening at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section. The reviewer for The Guardian, Adrian Horton called it “a moving and delicate adaptation” that “avoid[ed] the many cliches of the cinematic memoir adaptation”. He also paid tribute to “Ronan’s tremendous performance”. The Hollywood Reporter’s critic, David Rooney, said of the film: “Fingscheidt’s third narrative feature continues her visceral explorations of the scarred female psyche.” He also added that Ronan “puts herself through the physical and emotional wringer” in an “emotionally charged performance”.
We can find out for ourselves when The Outrun opens in UK cinemas on September 27th. It will open in Germany on November 7th.
