Boonie Bears: Time Twist is the tenth animated movie in the long-running franchise. Once again, it follows the adventures of Vick and the pairing of Bramble and Briar. This time, Vick is working in the city and seemingly has no memory of the two lovable bears or his previous adventures alongside them. However, alongside his demanding boss, Julie, Vick encounters a scientist who knows him. Vick, Julie and Sunny are thrust into a time-travelling adventure to restore the timelines before they are erased forever. As always, the film is full of comedy, and high-stakes adventure alongside an environmental message for all.
PREMISE
When Vick gets a chance to start his life again as a logger, he must save his friends by embarking on an adventure through time and space.
THOUGHTS
Fans of the franchise will get a kick out of what is on offer here. The animation, storyline and overall enjoyment level are on par with what has come before it. Newcomers though may find some of what they see in the film to be confusing. Young children, however, will lap it up in droves. The combination will keep them completely entertained while older viewers will hear and understand the messages that the film contains.
It also teaches youngsters about the meaning of friendship, about never abandoning their hopes and dreams, and the power of protecting what is most sacred to us all. It also shows us that hard work, while rewarding, can hamper our mental and physical health. We need to discover the balance or we risk burning ourselves out, feeling unhappy with our lot in life and the directions we have taken.
A plot thread concerning Julie may bring the smaller ones to tears. It does bring home the message that no job, no matter how important and time-consuming, should ever replace time spent with our families. Julie, through hard work, devotion and the desire to succeed, makes her way to the top of the corporate ladder. But the cost of this is her relationship with her father. Once her most cherished person in the world, Julie neglects her relationship with him, putting him off while she rises in the ranks. But by the time she can fit him into her busy schedule, it is too late. The film teaches us that family is important, and that time spent with them is one of the most vital things we have. It is something we can never get back. If we neglect this, we run the risk of losing them forever. And in the worst way possible.
THE ANIMATION
The animation is crisp, colourful and engaging. The wonderful design of Shen City, an urban metropolis of epic proportions cannot help but catch the eye and amaze. One aspect of this is a wonderfully vibrant depiction of sealife swimming overhead. This piece of animation alone is breathtaking. Add in the opposite of Shen City, the urban environment and again, every attention to detail has been added. It is outstanding. When we get to the science fiction elements of the story, again the film excels itself. Children of all ages will marvel and cheer at what they see on the screen.
VERDICT
A highly enjoyable family film, Boonie Bears: Time Twist also has many important messages and themes at its core. Some of these may prove to be too much, too soon for really young viewers. Some of what is mentioned and discussed in the film are aimed at the more grown-up audience members. While some are aimed squarely at adults. The morals and teachings on show here cover a wide range of ages. They all come wrapped in a gloriously colourful package that will entertain and enthral the audience.
The comedic aspects come at us thick and fast, the enjoyment levels remain constant throughout and the film zips along at a pretty frenetic pace. At times, it does seem to be a little too manic but when things slow down, it all falls into place nicely. The film proves there is so much life and thrills left in the Boonie Bears franchise, even after ten movies. Sit back, have plenty of snacks and soft drinks beside your seat, and let the film flow and entertain throughout. All in all, it’s great fun for all.
