MUBI, the worldwide distributor, streaming service, and production company, has revealed the global streaming release date for Elizabeth Sankey’s documentary film “Witches,” known for her works “Boobs” and “Romantic Comedy.” “Witches” premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and will have its UK premiere at the 2024 London Film Festival. It will be exclusively available for streaming on MUBI worldwide starting from November 22, 2024.
PREMISE
The film is a profound exploration of the unexpected yet compelling connections between postpartum mental health and the history and portrayal of witches in Western society and popular culture. Following on from her critically acclaimed feature Romantic Comedy, released by MUBI in 2019, Sankey now uses her trademark video essay style to turn the camera inward, focusing on her own experiences with postpartum anxiety and depression.
Sankey intertwines her personal narrative with historical and cinematic elements, recounting her experience of being admitted to a psychiatric ward after the birth of her son. The documentary features interviews with medical professionals, historians, and individuals who have encountered similar struggles, offering a comprehensive portrayal of the historical stigmatization and misunderstandings surrounding women’s mental health. Additionally, Sankey fosters a community for women to take ownership of their narratives.
