Thomas takes a retrospective look back at the biggest hits of 2024 to share his top 10 TV series of the year!
It’s that time of the year again when we make lists. Undoubtedly, 2024 has been a phenomenal year for television with the return of hit series Arcane and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. So, which series made it to my top 20? Let’s find out!
20 – TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY

True Detective: Night Country is nothing short of a masterpiece. From start to finish, it keeps you guessing. It is an absorbing and terrifying investigation. This series is also a compelling human drama. Jodie Foster delivers a mesmerizing performance and Kali Reis is just as impressive. Undoubtedly, this is a worthy addition to the True Detective saga.
19 – DAN DA DAN

DAN DA DAN is a mishmash of several genres that creates a weirdly fun ride lead by an unlikely yet compelling duo of characters. Science Saru’s unique style and approach to colours pushes the boundaries of visual storytelling. Undoubtedly, this is the best anime series of the year.
18 – FERMAT’S CUISINE

Fermat’s Cuisine explores in depth the complexities of the culinary world and the desire to strive for perfection. It is a captivating and salivating series with endearing characters who have to face their own struggles. Fumiya Takahashi delivers a heartfelt and layered performance. Jun Shison is mesmerizing in his role. They are supported by a secondary talented cast.
17 – EYE LOVE YOU

Eye Love You is a sweet and fun series that will have you invested in the characters and their story. It also features an amazing cast. Chae Jong Hyeop’s unlimited charm will cast a spell on you. It is undoubtedly the best rom-com of 2024.
16 – ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING SEASON 4

Only Murders in the Building is back and it’s better than ever. Season 4 delivers a complex and riveting new mystery while also being the funniest this series has ever been. The trio Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez remains iconic and once again they are joined by great new guest stars!
15 – SHRINKING SEASON 2

Shrinking season 2 is even better than the first season. It’s a dramedy that warms you heart, it knows when to make you laugh, cheer you up or touch your feelings. This series has a strong cast and this season spends even more time developing its characters. Comedy works for Harrison Ford, he’s a real sunshine as this grumpy loveable therapist. This series is the gift that keeps on giving.
14 – 3 BODY PROBLEM

3 Body Problem is the next big sci-fi series. It’s a captivating story that at its heart is about the human condition. With endearing characters played by a great ensemble cast, this one is a must-watch.
13 – THUS SPOKE ROHAN KISHIBE SEASON 4

Season 4 of Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe is composed of 2 episodes like season 3. Though, the second episode isn’t a full 1-hour episode but a 14-minute conversation between Izume and Hatsune taking place while Rohan and Tonio went away to get a rare Abalone. Despite being too short, this is an amazing season! This new adventure sends Rohan and Izume on a culinary mystery. It’s a series that never disappoints and this episode is an exciting addition to the franchise. Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe excels at telling weird stories while still finding a reasonable explanation to what is going on.
12 – SHOGUN

Shogun is a flawless historical drama that is respectful of the Japanese culture. It’s not the White saviour story, it’s a story about the Japanese people with actual Japanese actors speaking Japanese, in which a White character enters their world. With each episode, this series has impressed with its writing and acting. Anna Sawai, Cosmo Jarvis, Hiroyuki Sanada and Fumi Nikaido all deserve to be nominated at the Emmys.
11 – BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER

Batman: Caped Crusader is a masterpiece setting the new gold standard for Batman. It’s a mature noir series that tells a captivating crime story with each episode. This series is a 1940s-set period piece with impressive visuals and Frederik Wiedmann has crafted the next outstanding Batman theme! It is undeniably the best DC series since Batman: The Animated Series and also one of the best series of the year. Undoubtedly, this one deserves to run for many seasons. It has the right format to do so.
10 – HEARTSTOPPER SEASON 3

Heartstopper remains of one Netflix’s best series. It continues to be an incredibly charming series and a love letter to the LGBT community. But season 3 is also a lot more emotional, so get your tissues ready! In addition, Hayley Atwell is a great addition to this wonderful cast.
9 – AGATHA ALL ALONG

Agatha All Along is crazy, wicked, and surprisingly fun with a strong horror vibe. It’s a Marvel experiment that is different from what we’ve seen before while also being the spiritual sequel to WandaVision we’ve all been waiting for! It can break away from the usual formula and do its own thing. Fans of the comics will be happy it takes inspiration from the 2016 Scarlet Witch comics run. This series is also the gayest Marvel project; it does justice to its LGBT characters. Kathryn Hahn is better than ever as Agatha Harkness and Joe Locke is a scene-stealer.
8 – STAR WARS: TALES OF THE EMPIRE

Tales of the Empire is another triumph for Lucasfilm Animation. This series expands on the lore while also being a compelling character study. With a short runtime, it’s able to tell concise and meaningful stories with breathtaking visuals! These are dark episodes that can be brutal at times and that are full of surprises.
7 – STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE

The Acolyte is fresh and different while still feeling very much like Star Wars. It’s a gripping mystery thriller with compelling new characters, stunning visuals, and incredible fight choreography! Undoubtedly, Leslye Headland knows what she is doing with this series. She has crafted a love letter to the Prequels. Lee Jung-jae and Amandla Stenberg shine as the leads of this stellar cast.
6 – STAR WARS: THE BAD BATCH SEASON 3

The Bad Batch delivers a satisfying final season with breathtaking visuals. Each season, the animators have outdone themselves and they have given the best of themselves for this conclusion. Tech’s absence is felt throughout the season, thus it is an emotional rollercoaster. There are some great callbacks to previous seasons, The Clone Wars and some elements foreshadows what we see in The Mandalorian and The Rise of Skywalker. More importantly, this is one of the rare times that Star Wars actually gives us a proper happy ending. This is something we need to cherish.
5 – SILO SEASON 2

Apple TV+ excels in the scifi genre and Silo season 2 is another reminder of that. This season continues to be a gripping post-apocalyptic series that keeps you on the edge of your seat. From the production design to the cast, everything is outstanding! Rebecca Ferguson shines as the lead and Tim Robbins delivers a layered performance as the mayor.
4 – A KILLER PARADOX

A Killer Paradox offers an exciting twist on the usual serial killer stories. This is a dazzling and thrilling story with complex characters. Choi Woo-shik delivers a nuanced performance as this accidental killer while Son Suk-ku is just as excellent as a detective. Undoubtedly, A Killer Paradox is a must-watch series that deserves your attention. It’s one of the best series of 2024.
3 – THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER SEASON 2

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is easily the best series of the year. Season 2 is bigger and darker, raising the stakes to new heights with one of the most epic battles of television. The series continues to feature breathtaking visuals and an amazing cast. Morfydd Clark excels as Galadriel, this is perfect casting, while Charlie Vickers is deliciously evil as Sauron.
2 – STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW

Skeleton Crew is a series that puts the fun back into Star Wars. It brings a refreshing perspective expanding this universe in exciting new ways. This series has compelling characters and Jude Law fits just right in. At its heart, it’s a love letter to children’s adventure films from the ’80s.
1 – ARCANE LEAGUE OF LEGENDS SEASON 2

Arcane League of Legends makes a triumphant return. It’s a profoundly moving and explosive final season with many exciting surprises and revelations. Arcane continues to impress and shatter expectations with a spellbinding story and multi-layered characters. It’s also a real feast for the eyes. The animation is mind-blowing, constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be done. Undoubtedly, this will be remembered as one of the very best animated series of all time.
