The long-awaited sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire enters production. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova unleashes its fury in cinemas in 2027.
Following the success of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” it was only a matter of time before Legendary Pictures began work on another monster sequel. In recent weeks, we heard new cast members joining the project, caught wind of the start of production, and even added Jurassic Park’s Sam Neill into the mix. The studio finally dropped the big news today and announced that the title of the new sequel is Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
This sequel isn’t just changing up the cast; there’s also a new director on board. After directing the first two films, Adam Wingard hands the reins to Grant Sputore. You might know Sputore from his work on the Hilary Swank sci-fi thriller I Am Mother. He will be working off a script by Dave Callaham, who wrote Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. But before diving in too deep, check out the reveal teaser below.
THE STORY
Right now, details about the plot are still a bit of a mystery, known only to a select few at Monarch. But Legendary recently teased that the sequel will feature “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans, Godzilla and Kong, as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”
THE CAST
As we previously reported, Grant Sputore has already added some excellent additions to his cast. “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova brings together Kaitlyn Dever from The Last of Us and Jack O’Connell from Unbroken, who plays Dever’s brother in the movie. The cast is rounded out by Delroy Lindo from Get Shorty, Matthew Modine from Stranger Things, Alycia Debnam-Carey from Fear the Walking Dead, and Dan Stevens, who’s back as Titan vet Trapper, a role he played in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. But of course, the most jaw-dropping addition to the cast is Jurassic Park veteran Sam Neill, who joins in an undisclosed role.
We also hear that Kong: Skull Island composer Henry Jackman is returning to the franchise to produce the soundtrack. This represents Jackman’s first foray into the MonsterVerse in many years, so we’re hoping to hear more of his exceptional score that made his last outing so successful. With his epic soundscapes and Sputore’s directorial vision, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova has all the hallmarks of an instant classic. Let’s hope for another epic monster brawl!
