Rocliffe & Underground Films are excited to announce the release of their upcoming feature documentary, TESTIMONY, in UK and Irish cinemas starting on 21st November. This national theatrical release receives support from the BFI Audience Projects Fund. It will follow its UK Premiere at the Irish Film Festival London on 15th November.
PREMISE
TESTIMONY follows an extraordinary group of women. They have the backing of the activist group Justice for Magdalenes. Their fight to hold the Irish government accountable for abuses in the Magdalene Laundries, Mother and Baby Homes, and the forced separation of families takes them all the way to the United Nations.
The Magdalene Laundries were institutions run by religious orders in Ireland. These institutions had government support and operated until the late 1990s. Many women and girls were sent there against their will. They endured harsh conditions while working in the laundries. These institutions imprisoned and dehumanised women, claiming to provide “moral rehabilitation.” Survivors faced forced labour, as well as physical and emotional abuse. They dealt with the lifelong burden of being labelled as “fallen.”
Many survivors dealt with trauma from Mother and Baby Homes. In these homes, unwed mothers faced pressure to surrender their children for adoption. Many separations happened in secrecy and without consent. Residents endured horrifying practices, including vaccine trials and human trafficking.

A RALLYING CRY
The acclaimed film TESTIMONY, winner of multiple awards, is directed by celebrated filmmaker Aoife Kelleher (Mrs Robinson, One Million Dubliners). This documentary captures the unwavering determination of the Justice for Magdalenes team. They work to hold the Irish government accountable for decades of institutional abuse. Through unflinching honesty, the film raises urgent questions about justice and accountability. It serves as both a tribute to survivors’ resilience and a stark reminder of the cost of silence. Above all, it is a rallying cry and a call to action. It pushes society to face its role in the problem and make sure such abuses never happen again.
AOIFE KELLEHER
Talking about the significance of the film’s release in UK and Irish cinemas, writer and director Aoife Kelleher said,
“I’m delighted that Testimony will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland this November. This film is a reminder that, while confronting the past is never easy, it is vital, and that listening to survivors is the first and most meaningful step toward accountability. My hope is that the release of the documentary will help to amplify their call for truth and reconciliation, not only in Ireland, but everywhere such injustices have been allowed to persist”.
