With the start of 2026 just around the corner, the big studios are already lining up their blockbusters, ready to entertain us through the winter months. With the brilliant 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple already locked in for January, Sony Pictures is turning its attention to the rest of the year and the hilarious comedy, The Sheep Detectives.
The brilliant new comedy is based on the best-selling novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann and features an incredible cast. First, director Kyle Balda has cast the legendary Hugh Jackman as the detective-story-reading shepherd who is bumped off in the night. Joining Jackman will be Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, and Emma Thompson. Meanwhile, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby will provide the voices of the sheep. You heard right, even Patrick Stewart has joined the project as a sheep! But before we slip into a jar of mint sauce, let’s take a look at the fun but silly trailer below.
SYNOPSIS
In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realise they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.
Executive Producers on the project include Sarah-Jane Wright, Amelia Granger, Aditya Sood, Tyson Hesse, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Tim Wellspring.

Okay, the premise may be a little daft, but the film looks like bags of fun. Hugh Jackman always delivers a mesmerizing performance, no matter what movie he is in. But when you add in the phenomenal cast and some epic production value, The Sheep Detectives could be the sleeper hit of the year. Plus with Heitor Pereira on hand to provide the soundtrack, the whodunnit may have the (mint) sauce to be bleating all the way to the bank…and that is an exciting prospect.
The Sheep Detectives will release in theaters on May 8, 2026. UK fans can expect the film to land in cinemas around the same time.
