Welcome to The Official UK Box Top Ten.
This weekend at the UK box office, both Scary Movie and Masters Of The Universe hit cinemas, along with The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act. See who has the box office power while evading the horrors in the Backrooms with this weekend’s top ten.
(1) Scary Movie
Starting strong with Scary Movie, the sixth entry in the franchise debuted with £4,188,570, giving it a strong summer start. The Wayans brothers prove there is still audience interest in this series by mocking the latest hit horror movies.
(2) The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act
The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act debuts in cinemas with £2,684,963. This series started out on YouTube, before becoming available on Netflix. It’s yet another example of how a creator has organically grown their audience on the platform, before successfully bringing them over to cinemas.
(3) Masters of the Universe
Masters of the Universe opened to a disappointing £2,654,784, only narrowly being beaten by The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act. While it could be argued that the film was simply there to draw people to Prime Video and never meant to be a hit, the fact is this opening likely isn’t what anyone at Amazon MGM or international distributor Sony Pictures would have wanted for the franchise, and is another example of legacy franchises failing to connect with contemporary audiences.
(4) Backrooms
Backrooms managed to hold on well in its second week, only dropping by 47%. It brought in £2,253,638 over the weekend, and with its overall total at £8,651,881, the film will soon cross the £10 million mark in the UK, joining fellow horror hit Obsession.
(5) Obsession
Speaking of Obsession, it appears at number five in the box office top ten, bringing in £1,925,958 in its fourth week. The film grew 22%, a phenomenal result that shows this film continues to be people’s obsession.
(6) Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu
Dropping from number two last week to all the way to number six this week, The Mandalorian and Grogu sank like a stone due to new films in the marketplace, and the continued strength of Backrooms and Obsession. The film brought in only £1,382,768 in its third weekend of release, indicating a lack of legs. This is not the way at all.
(7) Michael
Nipping at the heels of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Michael brought in £1,357,610 in its seventh weekend, showing enormous staying power. The film overall has now brought in a total of £50,400,463, no doubt a pleasing sum for Universal.
(8) The Sheep Detectives
Managing to stay in the top ten for the fifth weekend, The Sheep Detectives pulled in another £554,289. It will likely just make it across the ten million mark in the UK, though with an estimated $75 million production cost (before marketing is included), this is unlikely to be the result that distributor Sony Pictures is looking for.
(9) The Devil Wears Prada 2
Narrowly missing out on the number eight spot, The Devil Wears Prada 2 brought home another £543,049 in its sixth weekend of release. This brings its overall UK total to £33,330,224, a healthy amount for the franchise.
(10) Tuner
Rounding out the top ten is Tuner’s second weekend. It made £433,924, for an amazing 20% increase on its opening weekend. This can be largely attributed to the fact that it opened in more than double the number of locations, but it also demonstrates people’s interest in the crime thriller.
This coming weekend sees the opening of Steven Spielberg’s latest movie, Disclosure Day, starring Emily Blunt.
