Icon Film Distribution is proud to announce the release of musical biopic THE YELLOW TIE, starring John Malkovich, in UK cinemas on 9th October 2026.

With a magnificent cast including Academy Award-nominee Malkovich (Burn After Reading, Adaptation), Bafta-winner Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings), Academy Award-nominee Miranda Richardson (Sleepy Hollow, The Hours), and Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders, Wolf Hall), this is a sweeping, sumptuous, generation-spanning biopic about famed Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache. The film is filled with powerful set pieces and, of course, incredible classical music. The score includes Bruckner, Berlioz, and Brahms.

THE PREMISE

The epic true story of Sergiu Celibidache follows the legendary conductor from a childhood spent under his father’s draconian authority. It takes him through to adulthood as he masters his craft in Berlin. However, his greatest struggle emerges at the outbreak of war. With the world collapsing around him, Sergiu must evade death and starvation. In addition, he must cement his place in the world of classical music. He risks being torn apart by a relentless pursuit of perfection. This could overshadow his legacy forever.

Recalling Adrien Brody’s Oscar-winning performance in The Pianist and Bradley Cooper’s celebrated role in Maestro, this film shines under the brilliant direction and co-writing of Serge Ioan Celebidachi, the son of the renowned conductor. Peter Menzies Jr. (Clash of the Titans) captures the visuals superbly. The film tells a uniquely personal story about family while vividly portraying a genius’s rise to the pinnacle of art amidst oppression, bigotry, and war. It serves as a passionate call to preserve an art form that deeply moves the soul.

Malkovich shines as the elder Celibidache, a successful but cynical and hot-tempered maestro who passionately opposes the dominance of technology in music. At the same time, rising star Ben Schnetzer (The Madison, Pride) portrays the conductor’s younger, more idealistic self. He grapples with the tension between family loyalty and the pursuit of his calling.
