Put on a happy face. Todd Phillips unleashes the famous dark and gritty iconography in The Joker teaser trailer…
Hot on the heels of yesterday’s dark and foreshadowing poster for Todd Phillips’ upcoming DC blockbuster, Joker we are about to be dragged kicking and screaming into the dark and gritty world of Gotham City thanks to the movies’ new teaser trailer which has just hit the wires.
The movie appears to a dark and gritty character study of the iconic Clown Prince of Crime which follows the downward spiral of struggling comedian, Arthur Fleck who turns to a life of crime after falling in with some unsavoury characters from the Gotham underworld. Phillips’ vision appears to be adopting a subtle less is more approach allowing the material to speak for itself which is most refreshing. Previous incarnations of The Joker have all added to the legendary iconography of the character and yet, Joaquin Phoenix naturally exudes these traits in a deliciously unnerving fashion.
Just when you thought the DC Universe was headed toward a brighter, lighter toned future, Joker brings back the unnerving darkness in glorious abundance. Joaquin Phoenix appears to be fully immersed in the role and the notion of watching his take on the character spiral into madness and embrace his Joker persona is a tantalising prospect.
Warner Bros. and the DC Universe is on a roll following their sensational efforts on movies like Aquaman and Shazam. And with Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, The Trench, Aquaman 2, The Batman and Joker all headed our way over the next three years the future looks to be in good hands.
Joker arrives to drag us back to the seedy underbelly of Gotham City on October 4th.
The Future of the Force. The future of pop culture writing.
