Melissa Benoist will hang up her cape for the last time after the retirement of her CW super series
Sad news Supergirl fans. Kara Zor-El‘s superhero adventures are set to come to an end after the culmination of the upcoming sixth season The CW has confirmed. Like the majority of The CW’s super shows, Supergirl was forced into lockdown by the COVID-19 pandemic, but whereas the other shows have resumed filming – Supergirl has remained on hiatus to accommodate Melissa Benoist‘s pregnancy.
Production on the sixth and final season is now anticipated to get underway later this month and will consist of 20 episodes that will debut in 2021.
Supergirl isn’t the first series to find itself scrapped by The CW. Earlier this year, The CW’s flagship series Arrow came to a close after eight thrilling seasons, and moving forward the oneness will be on the surviving shows like Black Lightning, Batwoman, Legends Of Tomorrow, and The Flash to carry the torch. However, set to join the super ranks in January is the new show Superman & Lois which will see Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising their roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane from Supergirl. Given how the Arrowverse (or CW-Verse as nobody calls it) shows crossover with one another – it’s a safe assumption that Kara may pop in for a guest appearance from time to time. (Unless something drastic happens in the season finale!).
Just minutes after news of the cancellation hit the wires Benoist made a statement on Instagram, saying “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful. I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”
I am sad to see Supergirl being put out to pasture. The series was always fun, and packed full of superhero awesomeness, however, the storylines of recent seasons had become a little repetitive and with Benoist becoming a new mom, I guess the writing was on the wall. Either way, the landscape of the Arrowverse is about to change – and the new Multiverse will have to take shape without Kara Zor-El.
