On Earth, everyone can hear you scream as the Xenomorph returns again in Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus. The Alien returns on August 16th.

Back in 1979, the tag line for the original Alien stated “In space, no one can hear you scream.” That may be true in the cosmos but it’s not true here on Earth. The Xenomorph’s debut terrified audiences. The initial shock came from witnessing the late John Hurt’s encounter with a facehugger, followed by the iconic Chestburster scene. This left audiences in awe. Subsequently, the film’s tension escalated as the cast was gradually eliminated, culminating with only Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley surviving. After a terrific sequel in James Cameron’s Aliens, the franchise seemed to become a shadow of its former self. Original director Ridley Scott tried hard with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but the franchise just wasn’t the same.

That could be about to change. Director Fede Álvarez is bringing us Alien: Romulus on August 16th. The film takes place in the timeline between the original movie and its sequel. The cast for the film is Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Álvarez has co-written the script alongside Rodo Sayagues, based on the characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Ridley Scott returns as a producer along with Michael Pruss. Following the official confirmation of the film’s title, anticipation has been building for a glimpse of the new movie. The wait is over. The debut trailer for the film has now been unveiled.

PREMISE

Set between the events of Alien and Aliens, the story sees “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

THOUGHTS

The film looks to be a return to form for the franchise. Considering the film’s aesthetic, the employed stylistic approach, and the profound sense of dread it evokes, we may anticipate a sequel that will be a source of pride. We have already heard that the film contains at least one scene that will have the entire audience either looking away or rooted to their seats in terror. Whether or not this is true remains to be seen. But it could be that Álvarez has nailed it. The destiny of the characters is yet to be determined, as they are not present in the timeline following this film. We do know that the new film is a standalone effort. Could we be about to see an Alien movie where the Xenomorph actually wins? That would be something.

The full mystery will unfold as ‘Alien: Romulus‘ elicits screams from the audience in theaters on August 16th.”
