The Bifa-nominated documentary from Elizabeth Sankey, Witches, sees an official trailer and artwork released by MUBI.
MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, has announced the global streaming release date for Elizabeth Sankey’s (Boobs, Romantic Comedy) latest documentary film, Witches. Witches had its World Premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and had its UK Premiere at the 2024 London Film Festival, and will stream exclusively on MUBI globally from 22 November.
Witches has received two nominations at the British Independent Film Awards 2024, for the Raindance Maverick Award and Best Feature Documentary.
PREMISE
The film is a profound exploration of the unexpected yet compelling connections between postpartum mental health. And the history and portrayal of witches in Western society and popular culture.
Following on from her critically acclaimed feature Romantic Comedy. Released by MUBI in 2019, Sankey now uses her trademark video essay style to turn the camera inward. Focusing on her own experiences with postpartum anxiety and depression.
Drawing from her personal ordeal of being admitted to a psychiatric ward postpartum, Sankey weaves her story with historical and cinematic elements. The film includes interviews with medical experts, historians, and others who have endured similar struggles, providing a rich tapestry of insights into the stigmatization and misconceptions surrounding women’s mental health throughout history. In doing so, she forms a collective of women determined to retell their narratives.
BEHIND THE CAMERAS
The production team for Witches includes Manon Ardisson, Chiara Ventura, and Jeremy Warmsley. With executive producers Efe Cakarel, Jason Ropell, Bobby Allen, and Thomas C. Hoegh. Chloë Thomson handled the cinematography, and the score was composed by Jeremy Warmsley.

Witches will stream exclusively on MUBI globally from November 22nd.
