Studiocanal announces the release dates for the 4K & Blu-ray steelbook, Blu-ray and DVD standard edition, 4K & Blu-ray Collector’s Edition, and 4K Standard Edition of the legendary Jim Henson’s Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.

Studiocanal has done it again! After their recent releases of cult classics and Italian crime thrillers, they have turned their attention to two classic fantasy movies from the 1980s. Fans will be delighted to learn that both Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal are coming to home entertainment. In addition, Labyrinth will receive a 4K Steelbook & Collector’s Edition. The Dark Crystal has been awarded the same treatment for its UK 4K debut. Both films are superb entertainment, perfect for families to sit together and enjoy. Moreover, they have enough quality and charm to guarantee rewatches for the foreseeable future. And maybe, just maybe, the parents who saw those films on their initial release can sneak in a quiet, secret, late-night viewing of their favorite! It’s ok, we won’t tell! Besides, we are likely to be doing it ourselves!

DAVID BOWIE INVITES YOU INTO THE LABYRINTH

From Jim Henson’s legendary Creature Shop and featuring iconic rock star and actor David Bowie, Anime Limited, in collaboration with Radial Entertainment, is bringing the superb cult favorite Labyrinth to 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD this summer! Kicking off with a 4K & Blu-ray Steelbook on 22nd June, Blu-ray and DVD from 20th July, and a deluxe 4K & Blu-ray Collector’s Edition from 27th July. A Standard Edition 4K release will follow on 2nd November.

The groundbreaking live-action fantasy, directed by Jim Henson—who also created The Muppets—was co-written by Monty Python star Terry Jones (Erik The Viking) and had Star Wars creator George Lucas as its executive producer. Empire Magazine hailed it as a “fabulous fantasy from the godfather of modern puppetry.”

A WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE

With a wonderful performance from David Bowie (The Man Who Fell To Earth) as the Goblin King, and an early starring role for Jennifer Connelly (Oscar winner for A Beautiful Mind), the film features an incredible array of gruesome goblins and truly stunning visuals (conceptual designer Brian Froud, who worked on Henson’s The Dark Crystal, was BAFTA nominated for Labyrinth); as well as a soundtrack by Bowie himself.

Labyrinth was filmed on an enormous and truly extraordinary ‘Goblin City’ set at Elstree Studios. This set featured one of the largest scenery backcloths ever made. It prompted the New York Times to call the film a “remarkable achievement”. Now you can see Henson’s incredible vision in pristine 4K in these new editions next year. More information will be coming soon!
