Freddy's Back! A New Nightmare on Elm Street is Coming From Paramount

Paramount Is Developing a New A Nightmare on Elm Street Movie Based on Wes Craven’s Original Script.

One, two… Freddy’s coming for you. And this time, he’s heading back to the big screen.

In a dream announcement for horror fans, Paramount Pictures has officially acquired the theatrical rights to develop a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie based on Wes Craven’s original screenplay. The film will serve as the debut release from Paramount Primal, the studio’s newly launched genre label, ushering in the return of one of horror’s most enduring icons.

When A Nightmare on Elm Street first arrived in 1984, it transformed the slasher genre by introducing a killer who hunted his victims in their dreams. Freddy Krueger quickly became a horror legend, terrifying audiences with his razor-sharp glove, twisted sense of humor, and the chilling realization that sleep itself was no longer safe.

A NEW ERA

The new A Nightmare on Elm Street will also mark the beginning of a new chapter for Paramount. As the inaugural release from Paramount Primal, the film sets the tone for the studio’s genre-focused label, led by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. The banner is dedicated to producing smartly budgeted horror, action, comedy, and grounded science fiction films, making Freddy Krueger the perfect mascot for the venture.

The project became possible after the rights to A Nightmare on Elm Street reverted to Wes Craven’s estate under the 35-year reversion provision of U.S. copyright law. With the franchise now in the hands of Craven’s widow, Iya Labunka, and his son, Jonathan Craven, the series has a rare opportunity to honor the original filmmaker’s vision while introducing Freddy to an entirely new generation of horror fans.

THE KRAVEN ESTATE

“We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans,” said Labunka in a statement to THR. “We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theatre – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds.”

“We can’t remember a time before we were fans of Wes Craven. The fact that Iya and Jonathan have entrusted us with this opportunity to help usher a new story into this world is an honor beyond words. We look forward to working alongside them to bring a terrifying new nightmare to audiences everywhere, and to welcome Freddy home” added Lifshitz and Margules.

RELEASE

After decades of haunting our dreams, it looks like the Springwood slasher is finally ready to wake up once again. Of course, one enormous question remains: who will step into Freddy’s razor-sharp glove? Robert Englund’s performance is one of the most iconic in horror history, and replacing him is no small feat. Whoever takes on the role will have some terrifyingly large shoes—and bladed glove—to fill. For now, though, it’s simply exciting to know that Freddy is finally waking from his long slumber. Sweet dreams… while they last.

Bring it on!
