Interview: Kentaro Maeda Talks I Cannot Reach You, Mr. Bride and Tokumei!

We talked with Japanese actor Kentaro Maeda about his recent works.

We recently talked with Japanese actor Kentaro Maeda. We looked back on his successful Boys’ Love drama I Cannot Reach You, in which he had the lead role. And we also talked about his other recent works – Mr. Bride, Tokumei! and My Beautiful Man – Eternal-.

PART I: I CANNOT REACH YOU

Thomas: Hi, nice to meet you. You have an impressive beginning of career, appearing in popular works and having starring roles. Congrats on a great year for you !

Could you tell us what was your reaction when you were chosen as the lead role for I Cannot Reach You?

Kentaro: After Kamen Rider Revice, there was pressure and anxiety as it was my second lead role. During my time on Kamen Rider, filming started immediately, so I didn’t have time to feel the weight of being the lead. However, this time as the lead, there was time to think about how to approach it, so I approached filming with different feelings than I did during my time on Kamen Rider.

Thomas: I Cannot Reach You is a beautiful story about first love. Do you have any memories of your first love ?

Kentaro: I don’t have any memories related to my first love. However, I thought it was lovely to see the portrayal in the original work of having a childhood friend as a first love since a young age. Despite the pain of not being able to confess for a long time, the feelings of continuously liking the same person felt like a very significant emotion.

Thomas: Did you read the manga before filming?

Kentaro: I’ve read it. I read it as soon as I was cast in the drama, and I was moved to tears by the incredibly emotional story. It’s already a popular work, but I want to do my best to deliver this wonderful piece to even more people.

Thomas: How did you prepare for the role of Yamato?

Kentaro: I also read a lot of manga regularly and have many favorites. So, first, I started by alternating between reading the script and the original work to fully absorb the character of Yamato and deliver a performance that fans of the original work would appreciate.

Thomas: What drew your interest to be a part of I Cannot Reach You?

Kentaro: The appeal of the original story is, of course, its interesting plot, but each character is also unique and charming. Because of this, I felt a desire to portray these characters. Additionally, as it is a BL work, I thought I could gain emotions and perspectives as an actor that I have never felt before.

Thomas: What memories do you keep from filming the series?

Kentaro: During the shoot in Kyoto, there were many tourists at the filming locations, with a majority of them coming from overseas. Having visited Kyoto myself on a middle school field trip, it brought back nostalgic feelings, and filming amidst that atmosphere is a cherished memory for me.

Thomas: What was your favorite scene to shoot in I Cannot Reach You?

Kentaro: It’s a kissing scene on the Togetsukyo Bridge during the school trip. We actually went to the Togetsukyo Bridge for filming, just like in the original work, and the scenery was so beautiful that it left a lasting impression on me. Despite some rain and unexpected incidents during the shoot, there were two beautiful rainbows, making it the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen.

Thomas: And, what was the most challenging scene to shoot?

Kentaro: The early scenes were challenging to portray. Being both a close friend and someone you love presents difficulties. I struggled a lot to differentiate between the atmosphere of friendship and the atmosphere of being in love. Additionally, Yamato is a character whose emotions are not easily reflected on his face, so expressing those emotions while conveying them to everyone watching the work was quite challenging.

PART II: MR. BRIDE / TOKUMEI / MY BEAUTIFUL MAN – ETERNAL –

Thomas: For Mr. Bride you played the cute character Hanazuma Ran, did you read the original story before filming ?

Kentaro: I have read it. It’s a work that combines elements of romance and humor, and I really enjoyed reading it. However, I was honestly very anxious before the start of filming about how I would portray the character of Hanazuma Ran, who is cute and of a small stature.

Thomas: What drew your interest to be a part of Mr. Bride?

Kentaro: While I still have limited experience as an actor, I have a goal to expand the range of characters I portray. Hanazuma Ran is a character unlike any I have played before, so I thought it would contribute to improving my skill.

Thomas: Was it difficult to play this cute character?

Kentaro: It was very challenging. I revisited the original work multiple times to prepare for the role. Since my height and appearance are different from Hanazuma Ran, I thought a lot about how to portray him within those differences. I studied the gestures and expressions of people working as idols, trying to imitate them as part of my preparation.

Thomas: You co-starred with Nimura Sawa in Mr. Bride and My Beautiful Man. What was it like to work with her in these two projects?

Kentaro: Working with Nimura-san, who played a completely different character with a different personality and relationship, was initially confusing as we both had to adapt to these differences. However, we were able to enjoy our work while appreciating each other’s transformations. I would be happy to work with her again in another project.

Thomas: What made you particularly excited to work on ‘Tokumei!’?

Kentaro: Everyone in the cast brought a lot of delicious treats, so it really was enjoyable to sit together, eat, and chat. The set was always bright and full of endless topics. Many people were very knowledgeable, so I learned a lot from them. Also, I love the manga One Piece, and it was very memorable to be able to parody iconic scenes from One Piece in the opening visuals.

Thomas: What was your favorite scene to shoot in ‘Tokumei!’?

Kentaro: It’s the scene where I drag Yukawa-san into the room, talk about my feelings, and get pushed away. Up until now, Tsukimura, who had always gone along with the superiors, acted on his own feelings for the first time. It’s a scene where Tsukimura clearly expressed his feelings to Yukawa-san, and it was a significant moment for his growth.

Thomas: What was the most challenging character to play this year?

Kentaro: Playing the role of Takuma Mizusawa in the drama Goddess’s Classroom: Legal Youth White Paper was challenging. Having portrayed the same character for about a year and a half in Kamen Rider Revice, it was difficult to take on a new role and prepare for it. Additionally, since it’s a legal drama, there was a lot of complex dialogues with specific legal vocabulary, making it challenging to memorize and deliver the lines.

PART III: ACTING

Thomas: What made you decide to become an actor?

Kentaro: The Covid-19 pandemic broke out when I was a university student, making it impossible to attend school. That outbreak also led to the suspension of activities in the competitive dance club I was a part of. This prompted me to search for a new path. I eventually grew inspired to pursue acting.

Thomas: Which actor would you like to work with next?

Kentaro: I would be happy if I could work again with Wataru Hyuga, who played my younger brother on Kamen Rider Revice, and Kouhei Higuchi, with whom I usually get along well. I would also like to do action scenes again with Kein Kosugi.

Thomas: Which role are you the most proud of in your career so far?

Kentaro: Ikki Igarashi from Kamen Rider Revice. It’s an important role that I played for a year and a half, and it can be considered the start of my acting career. It’s a significant role that has changed my life.

Thomas: You’ve been in the Kamen Rider franchise, are there any other famous franchises you would like to join?

Kentaro: I would be happy to appear in many works in order to expand my range as an actor. Among them, I would like to participate in NHK morning and historical dramas. To achieve this, I will keep working hard every day to enhance my skills further and be prepared to seize opportunities.

Thomas: What are your goals for the year?

Kentaro: This year, I want to strengthen my skills as an actor. One of my goals is to enhance my strong skills, such as action, and challenge myself in various ways to broaden the scope of my activities. I hope to make this year a year of growth and exploration.

Thomas: Finally, do you have a message for your fans overseas?

Kentaro: Thank you for your constant support. I’ve just started my acting career and I didn’t expect to be known or supported by people overseas. It really makes me happy. I will continue to do my best to make myself known not only in Japan but also to people around the world. Thank you for your continued support in the future.

パート1：『君には届かない。』

Thomas: はじめまして、俳優としてのご活躍に感銘を受けております。前田さんは話題作に出演し、主演を務めてきました。素晴らしい一年をおめでとうございます！

『君には届かない。』の主役に抜擢された際の御感想をお聞かせいただけますか。

前田拳太郎: ありがとうございます。

「仮面ライダーリバイス」以来の主演ということでプレッシャーや不安がありました。仮面ライダーの時は主演という重みを感じる前にすぐ撮影が始まったので、君には届かない。では主演としてどうしていくべきかを考える時間があったので、仮面ライダーの時とはまた違った思いで撮影に臨みました。

Thomas: 『君には届かない』は初恋についての素敵な物語ですね。前田さん,初恋の思い出はございますか?

前田拳太郎: 初恋に関する思い出はエピソードはありません。ただ原作で描かれている小さい頃から幼馴染に初恋をしている姿はとても素敵だなと思いました。長い間好きだと言えずに抱え込んでいる苦しさもあるなかずっと同じ人を好きでいる気持ちはとても大きな想いだと感じました。

Thomas: 撮影前に漫画を読まれたのでしょうか。

前田拳太郎: 読ませていただきました。ドラマ出演することが決まってすぐに読みましたが、とても感動的なストーリーに涙しました。元々人気の作品ですが、もっと沢山の方にこの素敵な作品を届けられるように頑張ろうと思いました。

Thomas: ヤマトの役作りについて、どのような準備をされましたか。

前田拳太郎: 僕も日頃から沢山の漫画を読んでいて好きな漫画が沢山あります。なので、まずは原作のファンの方々に認めてもらえるようなお芝居ができるよう台本と原作を交互に読んでヤマトというキャラクターの個性をしっかり自分に染み込ませることから始めました。

Thomas:『君には届かない。』に出演されることを決めた理由は何でしょうか。

前田拳太郎:原作のストーリーの面白さはもちろんのこと、それぞれのキャラクターが個性的で魅力的だったので僕もこのキャラクターたちの中でお芝居がしたいと思いました。またBL作品ということで自分が役者として今までに感じたことのない感情や価値観を得られると思いました。

Thomas:シリーズの撮影に関する思い出はございますか？

前田拳太郎: 京都での撮影では、ロケ地には実際に沢山の観光客の方がいてその中でも海外から来ている方が多く、僕も中学生の修学旅行で京都に行ったことがあるので、懐かしい気持ちで撮影をしていたのが良い思い出です。

Thomas: 『君には届かない。』の中で、前田さんのお気に入りシーンは何でしたか。

前田拳太郎: 修学旅行の渡月橋でのキスシーンです。実際に原作と同じように渡月橋に行き撮影をしてとても景色が綺麗だったのが印象的だったのですごくお気に入りのシーンです。撮影中には雨が降ったりハプニングもありましたが、虹が2本綺麗にかかり今まで見た景色で1番綺麗でした。

Thomas:前田さんの一番難しかったシーンは何でしたか。

前田拳太郎: 序盤のシーンがすごく演じるのが難しかったです。親友でもあり好きな人でもある。友達時の雰囲気、好きな人との雰囲気を演じ分けるのにすごく苦労しました。またヤマトは顔に表情が出ずらいキャラクターなので、その中で感情を作品を見てくださる皆さんに伝えなくてはならないのでそれを表現するのがとても難しかったです。

パート2: わたしのお嫁くん / トクメイ！警視庁特別会計係 / 劇場版美しい彼〜eternal〜

Thomas: 『わたしのお嫁くん』において、かわいい役柄である花妻蘭を演じられましたが、撮影前に原作を読まれたのでしょうか。

前田拳太郎: 読ませていただきました。

恋愛要素と面白い要素が混ざり合っている作品で、すごく楽しんで読ませていただきました。ですが僕がこの可愛いくて小柄な花妻蘭というキャラクターを演じるのかと正直クランクイン前はすごく不安でした。

Thomas:『わたしのお嫁くん』に出演されることを決めた理由は何でしょうか。

前田拳太郎: まだ俳優として経験が少ない中、自分の役の幅を広げたいという目標があり、花妻蘭は自分が今までに演じたことのないようなキャラクターだったので、自分のスキルアップに繋がると思いました。

Thomas:『わたしのお嫁くん』では花妻蘭役さんを演じられましたが、可愛らしいキャラクターの演技は難しかったですか？

前田拳太郎: とても難しかったです。
原作を何度も読み返し役作りをしました。僕が花妻蘭を演じるにあたって身長や見た目も違うのでその中でどう演じればいいのかを沢山考えました。アイドルとして活動している方の仕草や表情を研究して真似したりしていました。

Thomas: 『わたしのお嫁くん』と『劇場版美しい彼〜eternal〜』で仁村紗和さんと共演されましたね。これらの二つのプロジェクトでの共演はいかがでしたか？

前田拳太郎: 仁村さんとはお互い全然違ったキャラクターを演じることになり性格も関係性も違う2人に変わり最初は戸惑いもありましたが、お互いの変化を楽しみながらお仕事をすることができました。また別の作品で共演できたら嬉しいです。

Thomas: 『トクメイ！警視庁特別会計係』について、楽しかったこと、特に印象に残っていることなんですか？

前田拳太郎: キャストの皆さんが沢山の美味しい差し入れを入れてくれるので、それをみんなで食べながらお話しするのがすごく楽しかったです。
現場は常に明るくて話題の尽きない現場でした。皆さんとても物知りな方が多かったので色々と教えていただきました。
また僕は漫画「ONEPIECE」が大好きで、オープニングの映像でONEPIECEの名シーンのパロディをやれたのがとても印象的でした。

Thomas: 『トクメイ！警視庁特別会計係』の中で、前田さんのお気に入りシーンは何でしたか。

前田拳太郎: 湯川さんを部屋に引きずり込み自分の思いを話して突き飛ばされたシーンです。今まで上司のみんなにあわせていた月村が初めて自分の気持ちで行動してはっきり湯川さんに自分の思いの丈を話した月村にとってすごく成長につながったシーンだからです。

Thomas: 今年、キャラクターで一番難しかった演じ方は何でしたか。

前田拳太郎: ドラマ「女神の教室～リーガル青春白書～」の水沢拓磨役が難しかったです。
仮面ライダーリバイスでは1年半ほど同じ役を演じていたので、新しい役を演じるということで役作りが大変でした。
また法曹界の作品ということもあり、セリフも難しく分量も多かったので台本を覚えるのも言うのも大変でした。

パート3: 演技

Thomas: 俳優になるきっかけは何でしたか？

前田拳太郎: 大学生の時にコロナウイルスが流行してしまい学校に行くこともできなくなり、大学で所属していた競技ダンス部の活動もできなくなってしまったことをきっかけに新しい自分の道を見つけたいと思い俳優を目指すことになりました。

Thomas: 次に共演してみたい俳優は誰ですか。

前田拳太郎: 仮面ライダーリバイスで弟役だった日向亘と普段仲良くしている俳優・樋口幸平と共演できたら嬉しいです。
また、ケインコスギさんとはまたアクションがしたいです。

Thomas: 今までのご出演作品の中で、特に誇りに思われる役柄は何ですか。

前田拳太郎: 仮面ライダーリバイスの五十嵐一輝です。僕の俳優人生のスタートとも言える作品で1年半演じきった役で、僕の人生を変えてくれた大事な役です。

Thomas: 『仮面ライダー』シリーズにご出演されましたが、他にも参加したい有名なシリーズはございますか？

前田拳太郎: 今は自分の俳優の幅を広げるため沢山の作品に出れたら嬉しいです。
その中でもNHK朝ドラや大河ドラマに出演したいです。そのためにさらに自分の実力をつけてチャンスを掴むために日々しっかり準備していきたいと思います。

Thomas: 今年、どのような目標をお持ちでしょうか。

前田拳太郎: 今年は自分のお芝居を見つめ直してしっかり力をつけていけるような1年間にしたいです。アクションなど自分の強みを伸ばしたり、さらに活動の幅を増やせるように色々なことに挑戦する1年にしたいと思います。

Thomas: 前田さんの海外のファンの方々へのメッセージはありますか。

前田拳太郎: いつも応援ありがとうございます。俳優活動を始めてまだ浅いのに、海外の方々に知ってもらったり、応援していただけると思っていなかったのでとても嬉しいです。
これからも日本だけでなく海外の方にももっと僕のことを知ってもらえるように頑張っていきますので、今後とも応援よろしくお願いします。
