“The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is an entertaining, horny and bloody adult comedy series with an all-star cast.”
The Second Best Hospital in The Galaxy is a new animated series created by Cirocco Dunlap and executive produced by Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne. It premieres February 23 on Prime Video.
STORY

As its name indicate, The Second Best Hospital in The Galaxy is a series set in a hospital but it is not a medical series, this is an adult comedy series. It follows best friends Dr. Sleech (Stephanie Hsu) and Dr. Klak (Keke Palmer) as they face many challenges both in their work and personal lives. Dr. Sleech is a controlling person at work but is not the best at expressing her feelings while Dr. Klak suffers from severe anxiety. This is an interesting duo, they’re not necessarily alike but that’s exactly why I think it works. It allows the story to explore different subjects with each character.
During this first season, the two doctors take on a potential groundbreaking case about anxiety-eating parasites as the main storyline while also tackling on other medical problems like an autopsy, an exploding patient or even sexually transmitted infections. The medical aspect of these problems isn’t really important. Indeed, all the characters are aliens and some of their problems are not something you can treat seriously. What you get is a fun time. The humour comes from the comedic situations happening to the characters and through the dialogue. Obviously, because the series takes place in a hospital, there is blood. But, I am not talking about a little bit of blood, I am talking about big splashes of alien blood everywhere. It’s not really violent so I wouldn’t exactly use the term gory but you get the point.
It is also a series that is quite horny. The sexual lives of Klak and Sleech are an important part of the story. In fact, there are alien “sex scenes” and what I would describe as orgasm explosions. This series actually reminds me of Harley Quinn in many ways. These are definitely similar series who both go for the crazy stuff. Additionally, I want to mention this series has LGBT representation. It’s an important subject for me. So, when a series features LGBT characters, you can be sure I will talk about it. Especially when it’s one of the leads and it’s done well like here.
CAST

Moreover, Dunlap has gathered an all-star cast for her series – Stephanie Hsu, Keke Palmer, Kieran Culkin, Sam Smith, Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne. She got exactly the right people for a comedy series. Stephanie Hsu and Keke Palmer are excellent as this best friends duo. They both skilfully express their characters’ feelings, I think Palmer’s portrays Klak’s anxiety in an earnest way. In addition, Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne’s iconic voices fit perfectly in this comedy! Star Wars fans will also recognize the voice of Phil Lamarr who voiced several characters in The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch and Star Wars Rebels.
VISUALS & SOUNDTRACK

Furthermore, this series has an animation style that you often see with American animated series. It’s nothing groundbreaking or especially striking. Though, it is a nice style that fits for a comedy. I particularly love the alien designs, they’re weirdly fun. It always makes me happy when a series features an opening title/credits and this one does! It perfectly sums up what this series is about while featuring all the important characters. Finally, the musical score is nothing out of the ordinary but it has a sci-fi comedy vibe to it which fits with the atmosphere of the series.
