Taking the cinema by storm this week, Supergirl flies in, Jackass: Best And Last pranks us, Bill Nighy walks 500 miles, and The Furious gives us an explosive martial arts showdown!

WOW! It’s an incredible week at the cinema, with no less than five main releases to choose from, alongside three smaller releases. Offerings include Jodie Foster in A Private Life, the highly acclaimed martial arts movie The Furious, and Bill Nighy in 500 Miles. However, two heavyweights will be going head-to-head for your box office cash. Milly Alcock flies in with the second movie in the new DCU, Supergirl, while the Jackass team goes out with a bang with the fifth and final movie in the franchise, Jackass: Best And Last. So, it’s going to be a hard choice of cinematic entertainment this weekend.

We saw the film last night, and had a great time with it. I said in my review:

“While not featuring too much in the way of new footage, Jackass: Best And Last is still a blast, literally at times. You’ll cry with laughter while gagging at the grossness! It is something we have come to expect, but with a unique twist of possibly seeing the team in action one final time. While we laugh, we also see that the team can’t continue doing what they’ve accomplished in the past. They’ve suffered in the name of entertainment, harming their bodies and possibly their lives, delivering things that we have enjoyed over the past twenty-six years. To see them in action one more time is great and all, but we start to see the signs of time catching up with them.”

SUPERGIRL

Warner Bros.-Released Friday 26th June

Synopsis: When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Supergirl reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion for an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

Cast: Milly Alcock, David Corenswet, Jason Momoa

Director: Craig Gillespie

Cert: 12A

We saw the film earlier this week, and despite some issues, we had fun with it. I said in my review:

“With a wafer-thin villain and a rushed third act, Supergirl still flies but feels like a step back, despite excellent performances from Milly Alcock and a movie-stealing Jason Momoa. It is certainly a lot of fun, vanquishing the 1984 version to the dustbin of history. While I’d have liked a cameo appearance from Helen Slater in some capacity, the film doesn’t allow us this brief but welcome appearance. But that hardly matters in the great scheme of things. While Gunn used the classic John Williams theme for his Superman movie, the new DCU seems to have moved on from these gimmicks that remind us of the past. While the Superman theme is heard fleetingly in the film, there are no throwbacks to the 1984 version, not even a brief but welcome hint of Jerry Goldsmith’s music.”
