It’s Wednesday, so this means it’s time for a new episode of X-Men ’97. There are now two episodes left this season. Episode 7 is now streaming on Disney +.
THE ACOLYTES OF MAGNETO
The tragic events of Genosha took place in the first season, but their effects are still felt even now. The series continues to find ways to move the audience with the aftermath of what happened. This time, we experience the tragedy from the perspectives of Colossus and Illyana, making the emotional impact hit hard.
As usual with this series, it’s not there just for shock value—there’s a purpose behind it. This episode explores what’s happening with the Acolytes of Magneto, led by Colossus, in the Savage Land. We’ve already seen X-Factor and X-Corp, and now we get a closer look at the Acolytes. It’s compelling to see the different visions of what the X-Men can be and how each group responds differently to the tragedies and challenges they all face.
DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW
This episode very much explores the opposing visions of the different groups on their place in the world and about humans. It’s X-Corp and the Acolytes’ visions opposing. They’re the same people, but they react to what happened in very different ways. That creates tension between them, but it also highlights that the X-Men are like everyone else—their experiences shape who they become and lead them down different paths. The best way to explore the X-Men‘s relationship with humanity is through family, and that’s exactly what this episode does with Graydon Creed and Nightcrawler. One is human, the other is a mutant. They share the same blood, yet they’ve become two entirely different people.
Last week’s episode proved that Polaris and Bishop make a great team, and this week’s episode pairs them up once again. Their powers complement each other perfectly, but it’s their personalities that really make the partnership work. And with only two episodes left, here’s hoping we get to see them again! Just like last week, the episode ends on a cliffhanger, leaving the audience eager to see what happens next week.
