Review | Bleeding Love (2024)

Bleeding Love is a decent movie with good intentions and impressive performances, but it fails to stand out in any other way.

The subject of addiction can be a minefield to navigate. Its impacts on family life erode the very foundations a loving family unit is based on. Even the tightest bonds are frayed, creating a division that can be difficult to repair. The toll on everyone involved is significant, causing heartbreak, loss of trust, and, in some cases, an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. For some, the journey away from addiction is an insurmountable challenge. In truth, both parties become separated by an unseen rift neither can cross. The lucky few embrace the safety of their family support group before it’s too late. Others aren’t so lucky.

In Bleeding Love, Ewan McGregor and his daughter Clara illuminate this struggle. The film follows an estranged father and his drug-dependent daughter. It is a challenging but necessary watch that will tug at the heartstrings and shed light on how far the family dynamic can bend before it breaks. At its core, the story is about a father who’s struggling to save his daughter from following in his footsteps and bringing her back from the brink of addiction. As the story unfolds, bonds are broken and reforged, commitments are tested, and the actual cost of addiction is laid bare for all to see. However, the question remains – does this struggle make for a good film?

EWAN MCGREGOR

We have grown used to seeing Ewan McGregor wielding a lightsaber in big-budget movies, but he started in independent films. These are the kind of movies that prioritize an excellent story and talented actors over flashy special effects and huge budgets. Bleeding Love brings the actor full circle, and the results are enthralling. Working with his real-life daughter Clara, who also co-wrote the film, the duo hit the ground running and never looked back. Having a real-life father and daughter lead a road movie about addiction is a daring choice, but their dynamic brings an extra layer of authenticity to the film.

The connections between the characters are authentic, and their interactions are captivating. When the movie ends, the sincere and moving scenes linger in the mind while providing ample food for thought. Moreover, if the film manages to touch someone’s life and make a positive impact, it has fulfilled its purpose. Not that the film is without its flaws. There are several, but the performances from the McGregors aren’t among them. Both are in fine form here and deliver performances worthy of recognition.

THE FILM

The film centers on a recovering alcoholic who collects his daughter from the city after she awakens in the hospital, suffering from a suspected overdose. The father and daughter have a distant relationship, lacking a strong familial bond. However, the daughter is not aware that the family has decided to admit her into rehab. The film begins with the father driving his pick-up truck through the desert as they make their way to the clinic.

The opening sequences of the movie are pretty unusual. They create an impression that the girl has been abducted and that her father is the kidnapper. However, this highlights the quality of the writing—it shows how fractured their relationship is and just how deep the gap between them goes. Their connection is purely based on their DNA, and as we all know, being blood relatives doesn’t always lead to great relationships. The opening scenes further emphasize that there is no emotional attachment between them.

FATHER & DAUGHTER

Throughout the film, we are given insights into the lives of two characters with a complicated history. Despite not being close, their paths have crossed in meaningful ways. Both have struggled with addiction to drugs and alcohol. Still, while the father has managed to overcome his demons and acquire valuable knowledge along the way, the daughter is struggling and has not been able to break free from the deadly grip of addiction.

Through a series of accidental meetings, which often lighten the mood, both the father and daughter open up to each other and begin to rebuild their relationship. As they spend more time together, their emotional connection grows stronger. However, the daughter’s admission to rehab is still unknown to her, and this puts their bond to the test.

ADDICTION

What follows is a story on two fronts: the father tries to educate his daughter about addiction, while she tries to deny the extent of her problem. Both Ewan and Clara McGregor give exceptional performances in this film. Their portrayals are heartfelt and moving, and their real-life relationship adds to the authenticity of their on-screen dynamic. The struggles depicted in the film feel genuine, and the emotional baggage carried by the characters creates a true sense of realism. Overall, their performances are sure to resonate with audiences and leave a lasting impression.

The movie effectively highlights the issue of addiction and how it adversely affects families worldwide. However, the emotional story fails to justify the film entirely. Although it has a sincere message and a serious tone, the writing quality is not up to par and doesn’t do justice to its talented cast. Both McGregors go to great lengths to add weight to the material, but sadly, it never feels like enough.

STRUGGLES

Raven Aartsen’s score is characterized by a solemn mood and is complemented by a well-timed needle drop from Leona Lewis. However, the music ultimately fails to infuse any energy into the storyline. Nonetheless, a powerful musical moment with “Bleeding Love” leads to a brilliant montage sequence, with both McGregors singing their hearts out as they continue their journey.

The film is essentially a road movie, and as a result, it feels small in scale. The movie revolves around addiction, and Ewan McGregor’s acting skills shine in this aspect. However, the film falls short of being extraordinary and remains just a sum of its parts. It’s a decent movie with good intentions and impressive performances, but it fails to stand out in any other way. In truth, Ewan McGregor likely signed on to star as a favor to his daughter, but the script fails to provide him with enough substance.

VERDICT

Ultimately, BLEEDING LOVE is a solid film that won’t live long in the memory as the merry-go-round of content continues to churn. Both Ewan and Clara McGregor shine in a movie that deserves a better screenplay—one with more energy than is delivered here. The film is a worthy watch and boasts a welcome conversation about addiction. But in the end, it isn’t enough to have us coming back for more.

Settle in for a night at the movies with this estranged father and daughter. You’ll enjoy the popcorn and be warmed by the McGregors’ impressive and loving relationship. But by the time the credits roll, you’ll be eager to move on to bigger and better things. Addiction is a serious conversation; it just needed more love to stop the bleeding.
