Max looks ahead to the prospect of a younger Jedi Order in The High Republic
At NY Comicon 2020, lead High Republic writer Charles Soule shared some interesting info about his upcoming novel, Light of the Jedi (which drops January 5, 2021). The interesting thing that I can’t help but pontificate about is how the Jedi in this novel view the Force as opposed to the Jedi we know from The Phantom Menace – Revenge of the Sith.
It is revealed that most of the Jedi in the era of the Prequels learned about the Force through the perspective of Grand Master Yoda who had been a key teacher for over 800 years. The High Republic takes place 200 years before Qui-Gon Jinn found the “Chosen One” and Yoda’s role in the Order is not quite as extensive yet. The Jedi of this era have not been taught under Yoda exclusively and view the Force in different ways than Yoda’s teachers. Avar Kriss, the main character feels the Force like a song, a melody of notes, and sound. Her Wookiee colleague sees himself in the Force as a leaf on a tree in a vast forest. His perspective is not surprising as his homeworld is heavily forested.
Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is that the Force manifests itself to others in many ways and I believe some of the main problems of the modern teachings are the fact that they are exclusively from Yoda’s point of view. (These are Charles Soules’ words not mine). All of the Jedi in the Prequels (except for perhaps Yaddle) learned at the foot of Yoda and possibly one of the reasons the Order fell is that it was overreliant on Yoda’s teachings. Don’t get me wrong. Yoda is a good teacher; however, some of his beliefs were not correct (such as the irreversibility of evil) and he suffered from the same stagnant, slow to act attitude of the Order.
Even though he was considered a maverick, Qui Gon Jinn was much more proactive than the other Jedi of his time and if he had not perished; we would be looking at a far different chain of events. I am very excited to see how the Order is less homogenized in The High Republic and perhaps see where Yoda got so stuck in his ways.
