Hot Toys Review | Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones)

“This Hot Toys Anakin Skywalker figure is a must-have for Prequels fans. It features a highly detailed depiction of Anakin Skywalker, complete with various accessories. The head sculpt of Hayden Christensen is particularly impressive and is arguably the best representation of the actor’s likeness to date.”

The newest addition commemorating the 20th anniversary of Attack of the Clones has arrived! The long-awaited Hot Toys Anakin Skywalker figure is finally available. But does it live up to the anticipation?

THE BOX

This is an anniversary figure, which means it is not your usual Star Wars box except on the outside with the promotional picture of the figure and the Star Wars logo. But when you remove the first part of the box, you get the vintage-style box. It’s always a pleasure to get this type of box. It’s colorful, and unlike the more simple Star Wars boxes, it immediately attracts the eye.

ACCESSORIES

In terms of accessories, you have almost everything you need to recreate all the different scenes from Attack of the Clones. The display base is the same as Padmé‘s; it’s the floor of the droid factory on Geonosis. These two little pieces are also removable. Then, he comes with eight hands – a pair of fist hands, a pair of hands to hold the lightsaber, a part of open hands, and a pair of Force hands.

As for the lightsabers, you get Anakin’s hilt and the hilt he has in the Geonosis Arena. These are nicely sculpted hilts with a shiny paint app. They’re brand new sculpts. Anakin’s hilt isn’t the same in Attack of the Clones as in The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. This one is thinner, and the top has an additional piece instead of just one long piece. As usual, with lightsabers, you can choose between regular blades and action blades. Moreover, there are LED lightsabers as well. USB powers these. You need a USB-C cable, a USB plug socket, or a power bank to work.

DUEL WITH DOOKU

I mentioned above that while the figure has most of the necessary accessories, it lacks one crucial item—Obi-Wan’s lightsaber from the Geonosis Arena, which Anakin later uses against Count Dooku. Many promotional images showed Anakin with two lightsabers, but they only included Anakin’s lightsaber. Adding Obi-Wan’s lightsaber to the figure wouldn’t have significantly increased Hot Toys’ production cost.

Moreover, Anakin also comes with his Jedi robe. In Attack of the Clones, he wears a robe that is different from what other Jedi have. It’s sleeveless, and it has two thick strips at the front. The hood has wires inside, so you can adjust it for action poses, but the rest of the robe can be slightly adjusted as well.

Finally, he has his robotic arm seen during his wedding scene with Padmé in the film’s final scene. It’s not something they had to include, but they did it anyway, and I’m pleased about this! It’s highly detailed but not articulated, while his robotic arm from Revenge of the Sith has fully articulated fingers. That’s a bit disappointing.

THE FIGURE

I’m always happy to get an Anakin figure, as he is my favorite character. It was about time we got one from Attack of the Clones. It’s not the same outfit as in Revenge of the Sith. Here, his pants and tunic are light brown, and the pleather strips are longer. Speaking of pleather, it’s as usual: try to make sure your figure is not in an environment with a high humidity level, and don’t pose it in a twisted way that may accelerate the decay of the pleather.

The tunic uses fake buckskin, so it’s a heavy fabric. I’m not sure why they went with this because it’s not the same type of fabric he has in the film. I expected something lighter. They should have used the same type of fabric as the pants; that one is better. The costume itself is accurate, and there is no denying it. But the texture of the tunic isn’t. It’s not a big deal, but it’s a problem. Especially since I think it costs them more to make this figure with fake buckskin than a light type of fabric.

The boots are made of pleather, which means you have feet articulation. However, I recommend not moving the feet too much to preserve the pleather longer. The belt also uses pleather. You can insert the lightsaber into the belt like you do with other Jedi from the Prequels.

THE HEADSCULPT

The headsculpt was made by Tae Ho Kang and painted by JC Hong. It’s a fantastic headsculpt that looks like a young Hayden Christensen. I love the serious expression they gave him, which he often has in the film. It’s the best Hayden Christensen sculpt we’ve got so far. The Revenge of the Sith one was good but far from perfect. The Clone Wars one was a big upgrade, and this one is two significant steps above. The hair has also been beautifully sculpted. Be careful when you move the head; the padawan braid is fragile.

Obviously, he has separate rolling eyeballs. I’m glad Hot Toys is finally giving all its figures this feature. For this one, you have to remove the back of the head to access the eyes. This means you see the separation line between the hair sculpt, but it’s not really a problem.
