The Official Film Chart The UK Top Ten (4th March)

This week – Doctor Sleep casts its shine over the chart but even the power of The Shining cannot stop the Joker from laughing all the way back to the top of the chart!

Let off some steam, Bennett! Or maybe just let off a little. Either way, welcome once again to the official UK top ten rundown of what the British public have been clearing off the store shelves, ordering from an online retailer or downloading over the past seven days. One new title makes itself known this week and one makes its re-entry into the chart. As such, we must once again say goodbye to ‘The Lion King‘ and ‘Toy Story 4‘ as they once again depart the top ten placings. But guess what? You guessed it! There’s a change once again at the top of the chart. What film has taken the pole position in the chart? A new entry? A title moving back up? Let’s not keep anyone in suspense.

Rising a place and regaining the top spot after a single week at number two, the crown prince of crime has managed to laugh his way back up the chart as the Oscar-winning ‘Joker‘ once again reigns supreme. The Joaquin Phoenix comic-book movie rightfully gets what if f*****g deserves as it returns to its former position. There’s not much more we can say about the film. It probably will drop down again next week as there is another film that hit disc this past Monday that will possibly take its place next week. But it is great that the film has repeated its cinematic success on the home market.

Her magic has wavered a little as last week’s number one becomes this weeks number two as ‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil‘ drops a single place. The Angelina Jolie sequel has been riding high in the chart and will continue to hang around the top places for a while longer.

Escaping the undead for another week and blasting its way up four places to land itself in the third-placed position comes zombie comedy sequel ‘Zombieland: Double Tap‘. The Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone second go around dropped last week but found a new lease of (undead) life as it hit the disc format. Although slightly not as good as the original, the film is a worthy sequel and a great watch for over the cold, winter nights and to escape all the wind and rain hitting the country at present.

Zombieland Double Tap 2

Dropping a place but only hitting disc this past Monday, the sixth and probable final film in the franchise stays high in the chart as ‘Terminator: Dark Fate‘ ends the week at number four. Although the film was a box office flop upon release, it will probably hit the top spot next week. The film didn’t deserve its box office fizzle as it is the ‘Terminator 3‘ we should have got years ago. Once again, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are on hand to save the world from those pesky killing machines from the future.

Holding firm in the fifth-placed position, the owners and servants at ‘Downton Abbey‘ continue their royal run inside the UK top five best selling titles. The film has had a massive success on home entertainment after its superb box office run and on current form, will almost certainly be in the chart of best selling titles for 2020.

Bringing a little ‘Shine’ to the top ten as we start our countdown of the bottom end of the chart, we find the weeks sole new entry as ‘Doctor Sleep‘ awakens on digital download. The Ewan McGregor starring sequel to the 1980 horror film, ‘The Shining’ didn’t make much of a dent in the box office of last year which is a shame as it was one of the best films to come out at the backend of 2019. Hopefully, it will make more of an impact on the home front when it comes to disc this coming Monday as it deserves to have much better success than it has had so far.

Dropping three places to land itself in the seventh position, we find ourselves facing two Will Smith’s in the form of ‘Gemini Man‘. The film seems to have found better success on the home entertainment front than it did at the worldwide box office.

BAAAring a great reversal of fortune, ‘A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon‘ is looking likely to either drop to the bottom of the chart or even dropping out completely shortly as it tumbles two places to graze this week in the eighth position.

Singing her way back into the chart and regaining a top ten position as she croons her way into the ninth position, we find Renee Zellweger and her oscar-winning turn in ‘Judy‘. The film documents the last weeks of Judy Garland’s life as she performs her concerts in England. Anyone who is a fan of the late, great show-woman must grab the film as it is a masterpiece of acting from Ms Zellweger, one that brings the legend back to life once more.

Slipping on ice and getting buried in the snow as it drops into the tenth-placed position is the charming and amusing animated film ‘Abominable‘. The film is most likely going to melt its way out of the chart next week and return back to its home in the hills.

Abominable 5

Hitting download and keep from March 8th, we welcome Emilia Clarke, without her dragons as her romantic comedy, ‘Last Christmas‘ is released. The film, which has many of the late George Michael’s songs on the soundtrack was a nice little chart diversion when it came out last year in November. I ask anyone who has seen it to NOT spoil the movie for those who haven’t. But the film is a nice little time-waster that is great for those romantic evenings curled up by the fire or in the warmth of your living room.

So, will ‘Joker‘ laugh again next week at the top? Will ‘Maleficent‘ work her magic to return to the summit? Will ‘Zombieland‘ run riot and blast its way into the top position? Or will the Terminator terminate all opposition and take the throne for himself?

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, happy viewing!
