The Mandalorian | Pedro Pascal Isn’t in the Mando Suit as Much as You’d Think!

So, who’s really beneath the Mandalorian’s helmet?
With Star Wars fans everywhere lapping up the glorious episodic adventures of The Mandalorian, all eyes are on Pedro Pascal’s resilient gunslinger for our first look at the mysterious man behind the mask. After five glorious episodes, his chiselled facade remains hidden behind the helmet and shrouded in mystery.
However, according to Chapter Four director Bryce Dallas Howard, the face behind the mask isn’t Pedro Pascal’s as often as you’d think. In a recent interview, the “Sanctuary” director elaborated on her experiences filming the episode and revealed her regret at not actually having got the chance to work with Pascal. As it turns out, Howard mostly worked with stand-in Brendan Wayne, who has been the man in the iconic Mando armour for the majority of the season so far.
Whilst speaking to Vulture, Howard said: “He (Pascal) was in rehearsals for King Lear on Broadway. And so, while we were doing my episode, I wasn’t working with Pedro.” And on working with Wayne, she continued “He absolutely just brought everything to that character, and we were able to find the moments and figure them out together,” she said.
Wayne, (who is the grandson of screen legend John Wayne) was eager to point out that Pascal and he consistently worked in tandem on this first season:
“[Pascal] would ask me, and I would ask him the same question, which is, ‘Why did you move like this during that moment?’ We would go back and forth,” Wayne said. “The great thing about him is he’s not impressed with himself. He’s just an actor. And I mean that in a good way, not the bad way. He likes to learn and he likes to collaborate and he’s very good at it.”
Of course, in Hollywood, this is nothing new. Actors routinely use doubles for stunt work and high-intensity action sequences, but the notion of having your leading man replaced so frequently seems a little baffling. Howard went on to suggest that her time with Mando was a real testament to the collaboration between the actors who had worked tirelessly to flesh out who this character is. At least they have a better grasp of that than we do. We’ll be the ones glued to the television every week second-guessing every movement, head tilt and pistol draw desperate to identify which man is behind the mask this week. But I’m sure that won’t detract from what is the biggest “must-see” show on television right NOW!
The Mandalorian is currently the most popular streamed series of all-time beating Stranger Things into second place. If this is the shape of things to come, and with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor waiting in the wings – the future of streaming well and truly belongs to Star Wars.
