The Witcher 002

The six-episode limited series will chart the origins of the very first Witcher

Despite its confusing time jumping trend, Netflix’s The Witcher has proven itself to be a hot property for Netflix. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy watching a ridiculously buff Henry Cavill wielding a sword and slicing monstrous creatures to bits! It’s a slam dunk, right?

With production on season 2 about to restart following the enforced COVID-19 shutdown, Netflix has upped the ante by announcing an all-new animated series titled THE WITCHER: NIGHTMARE OF THE WOLF to compliment the show, and today, the streamer has gone one further by greenlighting a live-action prequel series from Declan de Barra & Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.

Set to be a six-episode, live-action limited event, Deadline reports it will be set in “an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, the show will chart the origins of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.”

De Barra had this to say about the new limited series:

As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin. A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilization’s true story behind. The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.”

Schmidt Hissrich added:

“I am so thrilled to collaborate with Declan and the Netflix team on The Witcher: Blood Origin. It’s an exciting challenge to explore and expand The Witcher universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, and we can’t wait to introduce fans to new characters and an original story that will enrich our magical, mythical world even more.”

The series is expected to shoot in the UK, though no definitive production dates have been confirmed in light of the heavy restrictions imposed by the UK government to prevent another spike in COVID-19 cases. Neither has the streamer confirmed the involvement of Henry Cavill, though being set 1200 years before Geralt of Rivia we should expect the series to remain Cavill free!

Personally, I enjoyed the first season of The Witcher, aside from the irritating time jump phenomenon, and am more than ready to partake in more awesome adventures in that sandbox. Even without Henry Cavill, I expect The Witcher: Blood Origin to be another stellar series with the usual throng of monsters, demons, witches, and scantily clad humans.

Bring on the mayhem.
