The Official Charts - Top Gun Rules The Skies

This week on The Official Chart, Uncharted is beaten, and Channing Tatum gets a Dog, but it is Top Gun that enters the danger zone at the top of the chart!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

THE BATMAN IS NOW AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD AND KEEP!

The biggest movies that have been released so far at the cinema are finally starting to appear on home entertainment. None more so than Warner Bros.’ ‘The Batman.’ The film hit the box offices around the world like a whirling dervish back in March of this year, earning $769million so far while still playing in selected cinemas around the world. It recently hit PVOD for the usual rental price of £15.99. It is now available on retail to download and keep, ahead of its June physical release. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/ Batman with Zoe Kravitz appearing as Selina Kyle/ Catwoman. Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/ The Riddler, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/ The Penguin. Many critics have declared the film the best Batman film ever made. While I disagree with that sentiment, the film is a really enjoyable watch and Pattinson is a terrific Batman. Sadly, for me, the film was lacking something, despite its almost three-hour running time. But it is almost certain to dominate the top of the chart in the weeks to come.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

While we await the arrival of the Dark Knight into next week’s chart, this week, nothing much has changed. The usual move about has taken place. We do have to say goodbye to ‘Turning Red’. But what is occupying the top spot, keeping the seat warm for Batman? Is the top placing still Uncharted territory? Has it decided to sing once again? Or has something flown in to claim the top of the tree? Let’s all enter the danger zone together.

TOP GUN FLIES TO THE TOP OF THE CHART!

The sequel, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ opens today in UK cinemas. And I can confirm that the film is one of the best sequels ever made. With that in mind, the original ‘Top Gun’ has made chart history. The film has flown up the chart by four places to become the oldest film to take the top spot in the top ten. 70% of its total this week have via digital downloads, making the film the new UK number one title, thirty-six years after it was first released. I don’t need to tell you about the film. We all know what happens during the length of the film. But for me, it was Tom Cruise’s finest hour until the sequel was made. The story of the best of the best of the U.S Naval pilots becoming even better is one that still resonates today. The aerial sequences are perhaps some of the best ever committed to film. And we laughed, loved, and cried during the film’s events. The UK home entertainment audience has grabbed the film ahead of the release of the sequel, reminding themselves of the story that has gone before.

UNCHARTED HAS BEEN UNSEATED!

After leading the chart for the past three weeks, ‘Uncharted’ has been dethroned at the top of the chart tree. The film, a long time in actually getting made, drops a single place to become this week’s number two title. Tom Holland stars as Nathan Drake with support from Mark Wahlberg as Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan. The critics have been indifferent to the film in honesty. But cinema audiences and the home entertainment crowd have taken the film to their hearts. The film has been a huge success and has already had a sequel planned. Not bad for a film that has taken over ten years to actually hit the screen.

SING 2 DROPS TO NUMBER THREE!

The animated sequel, ‘Sing 2’, is forced to drop to the third position this week. But it remains one of the country’s favorite go-to movies. Buster Moon and his team return once again in a film that will entrance children of all ages, making it the perfect family film. The digital and Blu-Ray releases contain many bonus features that will keep everyone occupied for hours. And the film itself will keep the youngsters happy to give mum and dad some peace and quiet for a time. It will also keep everyone fit thanks to the dance steps that can be copied thanks to the bonus features.

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME LOSES ITS GRIP!

Our friendly neighborhood web-crawler has lost his grip this week as he drops a place to land in the fourth position. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ still remains one of the best-selling movies on the top ten charts. And it deserves every success it has gotten. The third solo film for Tom Holland as the title character is one of the best superhero movies we have seen in recent years. And it doesn’t end the way you think it will. With Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield also being on hand as the character, the film is elevated above many other films of its ilk. The climax is one that must be seen to be believed and is guaranteed to get everyone cheering. Throw in Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Charlie Cox returning to his role as Matt Murdoch/ Daredevil in a cameo, and you have a great crowd-pleaser.

DOG TAKES A BITE OUT OF THE CHART AS IT ARRIVES AT FIVE!

Our only new entry of the week arrives in the fifth position. And it is a warm, cuddly welcome to Channing Tatum as ‘Dog’ makes its chart debut. The film is a comedy-drama, that has been co-directed by Tatum and Reid Carolin, both of whom make their directorial debuts. In the film, an Army Ranger (Tatum) must transport the beloved military working dog of a fellow soldier to his funeral. This becomes the road trip of a lifetime. The film is funny, poignant, and sad throughout its running time. And brings home the emotion of the story in full. It is a film that deserves to be seen and enjoyed by all.

DUNE GETS BLOWN AWAY!

We start our look at the bottom five places with ‘Dune’, which is blown down two places to occupy the sixth spot. The film, an epic Oscar-Winning science fiction movie, has had a great time inside the top ten and is still attracting a lot of attention from the buying public. The film will bounce back into the top places next year when the sequel, ‘Dune Part Two’ is released.

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS SLIPS BACK AGAIN!

The fourth film in the franchise, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ falls a place this week after bouncing back up the chart last week. The Keanu Reeves-starring movie slips back as it ends the week in the seventh position.

BELFAST IS SLOWLY DROPPING DOWN THE CHART!

Another Oscar-Winning title, ‘Belfast’ drops back a place this week as it lands in the eighth position. The Kenneth Branagh written and directed autobiographical comedy-drama remains a highly enjoyable film, despite its fall.

ENCANTO CONTINUES TO STAY IN THE CHART!

After vanishing for a short period, the Disney animated film ‘Encanto’ decides it doesn’t want to leave us just yet. The film, which won Best Animated Feature at this year’s Academy Awards rises a place to end the week in the ninth spot.

MARRY ME IS ABOUT TO BE JILTED!

And finally, the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy ‘Marry Me’ seems destined to be jilted. The film drops a single place to end the week in the tenth and final position inside the top ten.

ROUNDING THINGS OFF!

And that is that for yet another week. It is now a case of seeing exactly how many download and keep sales ‘The Batman‘ can wrack up. It is surely going to hit the number one spot next week. So, by the looks of it, the rest of the chart will be scrambling for the remaining places inside the top ten. That is for next week. But for this week…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
