Comic Review | Wonder Woman #1 (DC Comics)

“What writer Tom King has done with Wonder Woman is extremely compelling,” says Steve in his latest DC review

I have to admit that I have never really been a big fan of the WONDER WOMAN comics. I have no clear logical reason for such. I just could not get into them. However, I have been hearing a lot about this new Tom King run of the title and decided to give it a try. I am glad that I did! To set the stage for this run. There is tension between the United States and Themyscira due to an incident at a pool hall in Montana between an Amazon and a group of men who were harassing her. Things escalate and she kills everybody in the place. This led to the United States enacting a law effectively deporting every Amazon in the country.

THYMISCIRA TENSION

Wonder Woman #1 takes delicate and divisive political topics like immigration and xenophobia and sets the character in a completely new direction. It gives Wonder Woman an alternative threat to contend with. Rather than super villains, she is pitted against the United States government. Some might not like the political and social commentary going on in this book. But I feel like books that aren’t afraid to overlap with the real world are sometimes the most compelling.

What writer Tom King has done with Wonder Woman is extremely compelling. The story is well-paced and makes you hungry for more (which, we can all agree is what makes a good story). He takes a well-known hero and turns her into an outlaw, creating what will become an iconic run of the series. King also introduces a new antagonist into the DC fold going by the name of the Sovereign. It will be really interesting to see how this all plays out. I do have to admit that I’m generally not a huge fan of Tom King. Even though I was a huge Batman fan, I did not enjoy his run on the Batman title. But what he has done here is groundbreaking and refreshing.

ARTWORK

The artwork by Daniel Sampere is absolutely gorgeous. If the political topic thing isn’t your bag, just check out the comic for the artwork alone! Sampere is an artist that I had not heard of previously. But he is a super artist in the making. This book has some of the best artwork that I have seen in a comic in years. The current run is only up to #4 so now is a great time to get in on the ground floor of this amazing new run on an iconic character.
