Tom Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie have announced that the Mission Impossible franchise will not only continue but both have closed a deal to film TWO films in the series back-to-back. The films will be the seventh and eighth films in the franchise respectively and will be released a year apart with the first due in 2020 followed by the next film in 2021.

mission impossible

Following on from the fantastic sixth film, Mission Impossible: Fallout and its box office success, we are being treated to two new films, guaranteeing the summers of 2020 and 2021 will have an epic action filled continuation of the Tom Cruise-starring franchise and with the retention of Christopher McQuarrie as writer and director shows Paramount have the utmost faith in their respective hands.

No word yet on the rest of the casting but it’s almost certain to see the return of Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Rebecca Ferguson to the franchise and with the possibility of Angela Bassett, Sean Harris and Vanessa Kirby also returning, the future looks rosy for the action franchise.

Mission: Accepted | Tom Cruise Will Return for Back-to-Back Mission Impossible Sequels

With two films coming, a good villain will be an essential requirement. Sadly, Henry Cavill‘s excellent villain John Lark can’t be a part of it (No Spoilers) so the producers have their work cut out for them. And as the films are being filmed back to back, can we expect a cliffhanger ending A La Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest or The Matrix Reloaded? That is the intriguing possibility that lies ahead.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to prepare yourselves for two summers worth of Ethan Hunt and the IMF coming soon. I for one can’t wait.
