The Official UK Charts | Year End Review 2019

Join Carl as he rounds up what was another bumper year of the top-selling movies on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Download in the UK

Hello everyone and a very happy new year to you all.

As we settle back into our routines once more after the festive season, we can look back at 2019 and what it gave us on the home entertainment front. It was a battle to the end between ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ to be named the top-selling title of the year. The lead changed hands between the two many times until the overall winner was declared today. And the congratulations go to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ on its success. In fact, the UK top ten was dominated by music-led films for the year and ‘Rhapsody‘ sold more than 1.70million copies, bringing the total market value up to 2.6billion pounds, an increase of 9.5%. Physical copies have a 56% share of the market, 4K HD now accounts for 16.3% of the total Blu-ray spend now and, as suspected, The Walt Disney Company have led the rest home with an 18.6% share of all the disc market value whereas Universal Pictures leads the field with a 19.7% share on disc volume.

And so rounds out another year for the home entertainment industry. It’s funny but the output for the last six months of the year saw a reduced slate of releases despite the summer blockbusters hitting the formats. That being said, however, the opening to 2020 sees a raft of top quality releases coming up. These include ‘Rambo: Last Blood‘, ‘IT: Chapter Two“, ‘Terminator: Dark Fate‘, ‘Joker‘, ‘Judy‘, ‘Frozen II‘ and ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker‘. These titles are bound to sell well upon release and could dominate the early charts of the year for at least the first few months while the cinematic fare comes and goes ahead of their own home releases later on.

It could be another bumper year for the industry and the quality of the upcoming titles cannot be understated. My eye is already on the release dates as some of the titles listed are priorities to land in my collection. Will we see another year like 2019? That is debatable but in all honesty, the industry is in good shape going forward and after the bumper year of 2019, we can all look forward to more top-quality entertainment coming home with us once again.

Until Next Time.
