Mon Mothma To Return For The Cassian Andor Rogue One Spin-Off Series

The Disney+ Rogue One prequel series will be guided by the leadership of Mon Mothma

Thank the Force. We are delighted to report that Genevieve O’Reilly will be reprising her role as Mon Mothma, leader of the Rebel Alliance, in the Cassian Andor/Rogue One prequel series. O’Reilly first portrayed the character back in 2005 in George Lucas’ Revenge Of The Sith but sadly, her role was vastly reduced to a handful of cameos and deleted scenes. Yet, her involvement in the galaxy far, far away was far more prominent in Gareth Edwards’s splendid Rogue One: A Star Wars Story where the character once again played a pivotal role. O’ Reilly also lent her vocals to the character for several episodes of Dave Filoni’s hit Star Wars animated series, Star Wars: Rebels.

Mon Mothma - Rogue One A Star Wars Story

O’ Reilly joins Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk who will reprise their roles as Cassian Andor and K-2SO respectively alongside Star Wars newcomers Stellan Skarsgard (The Avengers), Kyle Soller (Poldark), and Denise Gough (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt).  Tony Gilroy, will now write, direct, and serve as showrunner. Thankfully Gilroy is no stranger to the Star Wars saga. He was a prominent figure on Rogue One‘s rewrites and was one of the driving forces behind the movie’s extensive reshoots.

Star Wars | Cassian Andor Live-Action Series Announced

The series, which seems to be moving forward at pace will focus on Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), the Rebel Alliance intelligence officer who recruited Jyn Erso into the ranks of the Rebellion and aided in the daring theft of the Death Star plans. The series has been described as a “rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.”

This is a brilliant piece of casting. Mon Mothma is viewed as an integral part of the Rebel Alliance and the character has a certain affinity with the fans following her original debut in Return Of The Jedi back in 1983. With O’ Reilly aboard to help steer the ship home, I am hopeful that the series will be able to secure the services of Jimmy Smits, who famously portrayed Senator Bail Organa in Attack Of The Clones, Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One. Having both prominent members of the Rebel hierarchy on hand to steer the fortunes of Cassian Andor would be a glorious achievement and would undoubtedly capture some of the nostalgic Rogue One magic.

Book Review | Star Wars: Ahsoka (A Second Opinion)

A release date for the Rogue One prequel series has not yet been announced. However, until we hear otherwise we can all look forward to more adventures alongside The Mandalorian when Season 2 of the hit series debuts on Disney+ this October. Every cloud and all that jazz!
