James Gun -The Suicide Squad

The director sets the record straight about his sequel/reboot

On more than one occasion, director David Ayer has gone on record to expose the level of studio involvement in the finished version of his Suicide Squad movie. In fact, the director has hinted that the interference was the dominating factor behind the muddled concoction of storylines at play.

Of course, Ayer isn’t back in the hot seat for the sequel/reboot ‘The Suicide Squad‘ – that privilege has fallen upon Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn who has been more than vocal about his excitement for the movie. But, has his vision suffered from the same studio interference as David Ayer’s? Apparently not.

A fan on Twitter asked Gunn if The Suicide Squad was 100% his without any studio tampering and surprisingly, Gunn was extremely open about the subject. He replied:

This can only be good news for DC fans and clearly demonstrates that Warner Bros has 100% faith in its director. Gunn has delivered two mega-blockbusters in Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and his track record with comic book properties is as solid as it gets.

Personally, I have never had an issue with Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Yes, the majority of The Joker‘s scenes were left on the cutting room floor, yes, the love triangle between The Joker, Deadshot and Harley Quinn was banished into the Multiverse where it belongs, and yes, Jared Leto’s performance as The Joker left a lot to be desired – but for me, Ayer delivered a fun movie. And more importantly, he got Harley Quinn right.  However, With Gunn in the hot seat, this time around my expectations are through the roof. I am a massive James Gunn fan and I cannot wait to see his magic sprinkled over The Suicide Squad.
