A script exists but rights issues are delaying another Gremlins movie!
The original ‘Gremlins‘, although thirty-six years old this year, is still one of the best Christmas movies of all time. Its mix of comedy, violence, and horror was inspired and the world fell in love with Gizmo and the Mogwai’s and was both scared and entertained by the creatures most turned into. Thirty years ago saw a sequel ‘Gremlins 2: The New Batch‘ which, although highly entertaining and darkly amusing, wasn’t a patch on the original. But over the years, rumors of a third film kept coming and going.
Every time we thought it was going to happen, it faded into the distance once again. Next year sees the launch on HBO MAX of an animated series entitled ‘Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai‘ which is set years before the events depicted in the film. But while speaking about his upcoming sequel ‘The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two‘, the writer of the classic original ‘Gremlins‘ movie, Christopher Columbus was asked the inevitable question regarding the third film that seems to never arrive. Although he didn’t confirm the film was incoming, Columbus did offer an interesting update regarding it:
“I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make the film would be. I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having – you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first ‘Gremlins’, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI in ‘Gremlins 3’ “
I wasn’t aware that there were any rights issues concerning the property so with those hanging over the franchise, it seems unlikely that the film will be able to get off the ground for a while yet. But with this admission that a script exists and the project is still alive, although barely, we may yet get to see some more Gremlin Mega-Madness in multiplexes after all.
